Chapter 19 - The Deal in the Shadows

Vanessa stumbled out into the pouring rain, clutching a dripping vinyl duffel bag against her chest. She looked ravaged; her manicured facade was shattered, her blonde hair matted to her scalp, dark circles bruising the skin beneath her eyes.
She sprinted across the flooded asphalt toward the SUV. Daniel clicked the central lock, releasing the rear passenger door. Vanessa dove inside, slamming the door behind her, gasping for breath like a drowning animal.
"Drive! Drive, damn it!" she screamed, looking frantically through the tinted rear glass.
Arthur backed the SUV out of the parking space smoothly, merging into the blinding curtain of rain on Route 1 without spinning the tires.
Daniel turned around in the passenger seat, his gaze fixing on Vanessa with an intensity that made her shrink back against the upholstery.
"Give me the drive," Daniel said.
"If I give it to you, I have nothing to bargain with for immunity!" she spit, her instinctual arrogance flaring up before crumbling under Daniel’s unflinching stare.
"You don't have immunity, Vanessa," Daniel told her plainly. "You're going to prison. The only thing you get to decide tonight is whether you go to prison in an orange jumpsuit or whether they find your corpse floating in the Raritan River on Monday morning. The hard drive. Now."
Vanessa’s hands shook uncontrollably as she unzipped the bottom compartment of the duffel bag, pulling out an encrypted ledger drive encased in military-grade silicone.
"Everything is on here," she sobbed, burying her face in her trembling hands. "The offshore accounts. The payout schedules for the judges. The medical reports they falsified on Thomas Merritt. Even the garden... Holloway told me to make Lily cry on camera. He wanted an unprovoked emotional breakdown to submit to the family evaluation board."
"Why the bucket?" Daniel asked, his voice trembling with an anger so deep it bordered on holy. "Why the dirty water?"
Vanessa swallowed, unable to meet his eyes. "Because... because nothing breaks a child’s spirit faster than making them feel dirty. Holloway’s manual says... if you make them feel disgusting, they stop talking to their parents. They withdraw. They become compliant."
Arthur Vance glanced in the rearview mirror, his face carved from granite. "We have enough here to bring down the entire firm. We take this straight to the State Attorney General’s Special Crimes Division."
"No," Daniel said, watching the headlights of an approaching vehicle through the side mirror. "Not yet."
"Daniel, why?" Arthur asked, alarmed.
"Because," Daniel said, pointing toward the intersection ahead, "Julian Holloway is currently holding a press conference at the county courthouse steps, announcing that Vanessa has fled prosecution and offering a fifty-thousand-dollar reward on behalf of his legal charity."

Daniel pulled his phone out. "Mara, start the livestream. We’re going to deliver the witness in person."
