Chapter 14 - The Breach

The white van didn't speed off. Instead, the engine revved once, low and menacing, before the vehicle slowly rolled forward, parking directly opposite Daniel’s driveway.

Daniel dropped behind the wall, his breath coming in jagged gasps. He didn't turn on a single light. Moving low, he retreated into the hallway and sprinted up the stairs toward Lily’s room.

"Lily," he murmured, gently placing a palm over her small shoulder.

She stirred instantly, her eyes wide, immediately recognizing the tension in his grip. The trauma of the past year had left her with the heightened reflexes of a hunted animal. "Dad? Is it the water again?"

"No, sweetheart. Not the water," Daniel said, keeping his tone calm, steadying the tremor in his vocal cords. "We’re going to play a game of camping tonight. Down in the storm cellar. Do you remember where your green backpack is?"

Lily nodded silently. She didn't ask questions. She slipped out of her bed, grabbed the small canvas pack she kept packed with her mother’s old sweater, her sketchbook, and her favorite colored pencils, and slipped her sneakers on without untying the laces.

Suddenly, a loud crack shattered the silence from the downstairs kitchen.

The sound of breaking glass.

Daniel pushed Lily behind him into the closet. "Stay here. Do not make a sound, Lily. If you hear someone come up these stairs who isn't me or Mara, you lock the closet latch from the inside and use the phone in my jacket pocket to call 911."

He handed her his mobile phone, stepped out into the hallway, and pulled a heavy brass-headed framing hammer from the utility drawer at the end of the corridor.

He moved toward the top of the staircase. Downstairs, the back patio door was standing wide open, cold autumn wind whipping the sheer curtains into violent white ghosts. Footsteps crunched over the shattered shards of safety glass.

Two men. Both dressed in dark civilian clothes, wearing tactical earpieces. Neither looked like a common burglar. Their movements were swift, methodical, sweeping the ground floor with muted tactical flashlights that emitted narrow pencils of blue light.

"Living room clear," one spoke into his lapel. "Check the study. Grab the hard drive from the desk and find the external backup."

"What about the target?" the second voice answered.

"If the father is downstairs, neutralize him. Make it look like an interrupted burglary. The client wants the cloud access credentials. She knows he downloaded the Baltimore files."

Daniel’s grip on the hammer tightened until his knuckles turned ivory. *The Baltimore files.* Vanessa hadn't just posted bail—she had sent clean-up contractors to destroy every trace of her criminal past before Daniel could present the USB drive to the district attorney.

Daniel waited until the first man crossed beneath the landing toward the kitchen corridor.

With a roar born of protective fury, Daniel lunged down the stairs, using gravity to propel the heavy framing hammer down in a brutal arc.
