Chapter 18 - The Hunt for the Predator

The rain began falling in earnest over central New Jersey, drumming like machine-gun fire against the roof of Daniel’s borrowed SUV. Arthur had traced Vanessa’s ankle monitor signal—not through the official police channel, which had mysteriously gone offline due to a "server maintenance glitch," but through an internal cellular tracker Arthur had illegally cloned from the county bail bondsman’s registry.

Vanessa wasn't at her sister’s townhouse. She was holed up in a dilapidated roadside motel along Route 1, tucked behind a disused truck stop where neon signs buzzed weakly against the wet asphalt.

"She’s in Room 114," Arthur whispered from the passenger seat, loading a high-resolution telephoto camera. "Daniel, remember: you do not step out of this car. If you lay a hand on her, Holloway’s team will have you arrested for witness tampering, and you lose Lily forever."

"I don't need to touch her," Daniel said, staring at the peeling turquoise door of Room 114. "She’s terrified. You don't hide in a twenty-dollar-a-night motel when you’ve just posted a quarter-million-dollar bond unless you know the people who paid it are coming to kill you."

Daniel took out his phone. He dialed the direct number to the motel’s front desk, asking to be transferred to Room 114.

The phone inside the room rang three times before an exhausted, frantic voice answered.

"Who is this?" Vanessa hissed.

"You should look out your back window, Vanessa," Daniel said calmly. "The black Audi with tinted windows just pulled into the gravel lot behind the dumpster."

A sharp, terrified intake of breath sounded over the line. Daniel heard the rattle of curtain rings being pulled aside.

"Daniel?" her voice shook, the haughty, sadistic cruelty from the garden entirely stripped away. "How did you get this number?"

"Holloway sent two men to my house last night to kill Lily and me," Daniel said, keeping his voice deadpan, chillingly measured. "They failed. One of them has a broken shoulder. The other lost his gun. Do you think Holloway is going to let you live through the weekend, knowing the police are tracing the registration on that white van?"

"You don't understand what he does," Vanessa whimpered, her voice cracking. "He has everyone in his pocket. The judges, the probate clerks... I only did what the contracts specified!"

"You dumped filthy drainage runoff over a seven-year-old child and told her her dead mother hated her," Daniel growled, his knuckles white against the steering wheel. "You did that because you enjoyed it. But right now, you have one choice: you stay in that room and let Holloway’s clean-up crew stage your overdose, or you walk out the front door, get into my car, and hand over every document you stole from the Merritt family and my wife’s estate."

Silence hung on the line for four agonizing seconds.

Then, the door to Room 114 swung open.
