Chapter 17 - The Architect Behind the Veil

Daniel closed his eyes, fighting back the wave of agony that threatened to tear his composure apart. When he opened them, the sorrow was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve that terrified even Mara.
"Where is the headquarters of Aegis Guardian Solutions?" Daniel asked Arthur quietly.
Arthur looked up from his screen. "Daniel, you cannot go hunting these people. They have high-priced lawyers, private security firms, and judges on their golf rosters."
"I’m not hunting them with a gun, Arthur," Daniel said, his voice dropping an octave. "I’m hunting them with the truth. That recording wasn't the only thing the contractor gave us. What did Mara’s camera capture three days before the bucket incident?"
Mara’s eyes widened. "The black Mercedes."
"Yes," Daniel said. "The black Mercedes that parked at the end of the cul-de-sac every afternoon. Vanessa went out to that car every Tuesday at 3:00 PM. She handed a man an envelope, and he handed her a manila folder."
Arthur tapped the keys on his laptop frantically. "Give me the license plate if you have it."
"I do," Mara said, pulling her mobile phone from her pocket and opening a stored image from her backup drive. "I zoomed in with the telephoto lens on my surveillance rig. New Jersey plate: X79-KLP."
Arthur ran the plate through a commercial database. Ten seconds later, a corporate profile popped up on the monitor.
The vehicle was registered to a legal practice in Princeton: *Holloway, Stern & Croft LLC.*
"Holloway," Arthur muttered, reading the senior partner’s name. "Julian Holloway. He’s the chairman of the county bar association’s ethics committee. He’s the one who recommended the private mediator for your estate documents, Daniel."
The puzzle snapped together with horrifying clarity. Julian Holloway wasn't just Vanessa’s lawyer—he was the architect. He identified wealthy, vulnerable families going through bereavement, drafted estate plans with subtle, lethal loopholes, and sent Vanessa in to trigger the catastrophic failure that activated the trust clauses.
"And now," Daniel said, standing up from the table, "Vanessa is out on bail because Julian Holloway paid her bond. Because if Vanessa goes to trial and takes a plea deal, Julian Holloway spends the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary."
"They're going to silence her," Mara realized, gasping. "They’re not trying to protect Vanessa. They’re going to eliminate her before her preliminary hearing on Monday."

"Then we find her first," Daniel stated.
