Chapter 9 - Society Turns Its Back

By eight o'clock the following morning, the downfall of Victoria Anderson had become the premier media sensation across the entire West Coast.
A prominent society blogger who had attended the garden party had managed to upload a short, crystal-clear video of Victoria dumping the mud bucket over my head.
Within twelve hours, the viral footage had amassed over fourteen million views across major social media platforms, sparking universal outrage.
The headline across the front page of the Los Angeles Times entertainment and business section was merciless: “High Society Matron Jailed for Attempted Murder and Domestic Torment.”
Every local television news van in the city was parked outside the gates of our canyon estate, their telephoto lenses pointed toward the long driveway.
Inside the women's detention wing of the central county jail, Victoria Anderson sat on a cold, bolted metal bench in a windowless holding cell.
Her pristine platinum hair was now tangled and dull, the designer crimson dress had been confiscated as criminal evidence, and she wore an oversized, faded orange inmate jumpsuit.
Her manicured hands were bare, her diamond rings and expensive bracelets locked away in an intake property locker.
Across the small interview table sat her lead defense attorney, Harrison Vance, a prominent high-priced corporate fixer who usually handled white-collar tax evasion.
Vance looked thoroughly exhausted, his silk tie loosened and his forehead covered in a sheen of nervous perspiration.
“Harrison, get me out of here this instant!” Victoria snarled, slamming her cuffed wrists against the steel table.
“The smell in this facility is revolting, the guards are completely disrespectful, and some lunatic in the adjacent cell threw an apple core at me!” she screeched with unrestrained venom.
“Post my bail immediately, transfer five hundred thousand from the joint checking account, and hire a private security detail to escort me to a luxury hotel!” she commanded.
Harrison Vance slowly removed his gold-rimmed glasses, pinched the bridge of his nose, and let out a long, defeated sigh.
“Victoria, you are not listening to a single word I am saying,” Vance replied, his voice heavy with grim realism.
“There is no bail,” Vance stated bluntly.
Victoria froze, her sharp features twisting into disbelief.
“What do you mean there is no bail? I am the wife of Arthur Anderson! I am a pillar of this community!” she protested loudly.
“You were a pillar of the community, Victoria,” Vance corrected her coldly.
“Judge Morrison held an emergency arraignment at dawn,” the attorney explained.
“Between the video evidence of assault, the audio recording of you withholding Arthur's medication, and the stolen nitroglycerin found in your personal safe, you are classified as a high-level flight risk and a violent felon,” Vance said.
“The state has charged you with attempted first-degree murder, felony elderly endangerment, corporate forgery, and aggravated domestic battery,” he continued, reading from his notes.
Victoria's chest heaved in shallow, panicked gasps as the cold reality of the penal system began to pierce her fortress of delusion.
“Then use my offshore reserves!” she hissed, leaning forward across the table.
“Wire two million dollars from the Cayman holding company and hire the top three criminal litigators in the state!” she demanded.
Vance offered a bleak, humorless smile.
“That money is gone, Victoria,” Vance said quietly.
“Ryan Anderson secured an emergency court injunction at midnight, freezing every domestic account, every credit line, and placing a temporary international lien on all foreign entities linked to your name,” Vance revealed.
“Your charity foundation board held an emergency meeting two hours ago; they voted unanimously to strip you of your title, remove your name from the building, and file a civil suit for embezzlement,” he added.
Victoria stared at her attorney as if he had spoken in an ancient, dead language.
“What about my friends?” she whispered, her voice finally losing its arrogant edge and cracking with sheer terror.
“What about the Belmonts? The Hastingtons? Mayor Sterling? I hosted their fundraisers! I gave them hundreds of thousands of dollars!” she cried.
“Every single one of them has issued a public statement condemning your behavior,” Vance replied without pity.
“Mrs. Belmont called you an unhinged sociopath on live television twenty minutes ago,” the lawyer noted dryly.
Before Victoria could scream, the heavy iron door of the interview room buzzed loudly and swung open.
Stepping into the room was an elderly gentleman carrying a thick leather briefcase, his posture upright and his expression as sharp as a razor.
It was Walter Vance—Harrison's father and Arthur Anderson's personal corporate counsel for over thirty-five years.
Walter glanced at his son with professional detachment before turning his piercing gaze onto the trembling woman in the orange jumpsuit.
“Walter!” Victoria gasped, grasping at a phantom straw of hope.
“Did Arthur send you? Did he realize this is all a grotesque mistake?” she asked eagerly.
Walter did not sit down.
He opened his briefcase, extracted a thick stack of legal documents stamped with official red court seals, and dropped them heavily onto the metal table before her.
“My client, Arthur Anderson, has officially initiated emergency dissolution proceedings regarding your marriage,” Walter stated with icy precision.
“Because your marriage was entered into under fraudulent pretenses, and because you attempted to execute him for financial gain, the prenuptial agreement is completely voided under the state's Slayer Statute doctrine,” Walter explained.
“You are entitled to zero spousal support, zero property division, and zero access to the Anderson family trust,” the old attorney continued.
“Furthermore, my client has filed a civil wrongful-injury suit demanding fifty million dollars in compensatory and punitive damages for the torment you inflicted upon Miss Lily Anderson,” Walter added.
Victoria stared at the white paper on the table, her breath hitching in her chest as her entire fabricated empire vanished into nothingness.
“Arthur cannot do this to me...” she whimpered pathetically.
Walter leaned down, looking directly into her wide, terrified eyes.

“Arthur isn't doing this to you, Victoria,” Walter whispered with lethal calm.
“You did this to yourself the moment you touched his daughter.”
