Chapter 14 - The Day of Reckoning

The grand ceremonial courtroom of the Los Angeles Federal District Court was packed to maximum capacity by nine o'clock that morning.

Over one hundred accredited international journalists sat in the press gallery, their pens poised and laptops glowing in the dim, walnut-paneled chamber.

Dozens of high-society figures who had attended the infamous garden party two days earlier occupied the public benches, their faces tense with shame and morbid curiosity.

The very women who had laughed and sipped champagne while Victoria humiliated me now sat in complete silence, desperate to distance themselves from her criminal fallout.

At the front prosecution table, Ryan, Arthur, and I sat beside the United States Attorney and his team of prosecutors.

Arthur sat tall and regal in a tailored charcoal three-piece suit, his posture completely erect without the aid of his walking cane.

Ryan wore a sharp navy suit, his broad shoulders squared and his protective gaze scanning the courtroom with commanding vigilance.

I wore an elegant, modest midnight-blue silk dress, my mother’s sapphire ring shining like a beacon of restored honor upon my right hand.

At exactly nine-fifteen, the heavy oak doors at the side of the courtroom swung open under the supervision of four armed Marshals.

A sudden wave of gasps and camera clicks erupted from the gallery.

Victoria Anderson was shuffled into the room, her ankles chained, her wrists shackled to her waist, and her eyes wide with unbridled panic.

She wore no designer clothes, no makeup, and no jewelry; only the faded green jumpsuit of a high-risk federal detainee.

Her platinum hair was shorn unevenly into a jagged shoulder-length cut, and her sunken eyes darted frantically across the gallery looking for an ally.

Every single person in the room looked away, turning their backs on her gaze as if she carried a deadly contagion.

When her eyes finally landed on our family table, she stopped dead in her tracks, her breath hitching audibly in the quiet chamber.

She looked at Arthur, whose eyes met hers with the cold, immovable detachment of a judge examining a stranger.

She looked at Ryan, whose face was set in granite, an impenetrable shield standing between her and our legacy.

And then she looked at me.

The girl she had shoved into walls, the girl she had called worthless, the girl she had covered in filthy mud before two hundred mocking socialites.

I did not flinch, and I did not lower my eyes.

I held her gaze with steady, unwavering composure, lifting my chin slightly so that the morning light illuminated my mother’s ring upon my finger.

Victoria’s lips parted in a silent, agonizing gasp as the crushing weight of her total defeat settled into her bones.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Marcus Holloway," the bailiff called out, his deep voice commanding absolute order.

The entire courtroom stood as the senior federal judge took his seat beneath the Great Seal of the United States.

"Be seated," Judge Holloway instructed, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he reviewed the massive criminal docket before him.

"We are here for the formal arraignment and plea entry in the matter of the United States versus Victoria Anderson," the judge began.

"Inmate Anderson, you are charged with thirty-eight federal counts, including racketeering, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder," Holloway read.

"How does the defendant plead to these charges?" the judge asked, looking down over the bench.

Victoria’s court-appointed public defender leaned in, whispering frantically into her ear for thirty agonizing seconds.

The public defender then straightened his papers, clearing his throat nervously before addressing the court.

"Your Honor, in exchange for the government withdrawing the pursuit of capital enhancement, my client has signed a comprehensive confession and allocution," the lawyer announced.

"The defendant enters a plea of guilty to all thirty-eight counts without reservation," the attorney stated.

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery, followed by the furious clatter of journalists typing breaking news alerts to the world.

Judge Holloway looked down at Victoria, his expression stern, severe, and utterly without mercy.

"Victoria Anderson, do you fully understand that by entering this guilty plea, you waive all rights to trial, appeal, or future sentence reduction?" Judge Holloway asked.

Victoria bowed her head, her shoulders shaking with violent, suppressed sobs as she gripped the microphone with chained hands.

"I... I understand, Your Honor," she choked out, her voice barely a pathetic squeak.

"Do you admit under oath that you systematically embezzled eighty-four million dollars, withheld emergency medicine from your husband, and ordered the murder of Ryan and Arthur Anderson?" the judge pressed relentlessly.

Victoria swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward Arthur one last time, begging for a flicker of forgiveness that would never come.

Arthur’s face remained completely still, an unbroken wall of absolute righteous justice.

"Yes," Victoria whispered into the microphone, her confession sealing her doom into the permanent federal record.

"I admit everything," she wept, collapsing onto the table with her face buried in her shackled hands.

Judge Holloway nodded, picking up his wooden gavel with deliberate, heavy authority.

"The court accepts the defendant's plea of guilty," Judge Holloway pronounced, his voice ringing through every corner of the vast room.

"Sentencing is set for fourteen days from today, at which time this court will impose a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole," the judge decreed.

"Remand the prisoner to the high-security federal transfer facility in Victorville immediately," Holloway ordered.

May you like

With a single, thunderous strike of the wooden gavel, the reign of terror was officially brought to an end.

The Marshals hoisted Victoria from her seat, pulling her roughly through the side exit while her broken wails echoed down the corridor until the heavy steel door slammed shut forever.
