Chapter 13 - The Broken Fortress

The dawn of the following morning broke over the San Gabriel Mountains in brilliant shades of amber and rose gold.

Inside the central county jail, however, the world was cast in the sterile, fluorescent gray of concrete corridors and cold iron bars.

Victoria Anderson sat alone on the edge of her steel bunk, her back pressed against the sweating cinderblock wall of cell block D.

Her hands trembled uncontrollably against the rough fabric of her orange jumpsuit, her manicured nails now ragged, broken, and unpainted.

For the past eighteen hours, she had waited in agonizing suspense for the confirmation call that never arrived.

She had expected news of a tragic multi-car pileup in the canyon.

She had anticipated the sudden death of her husband and the silencing of her stepson before the sunrise could illuminate their testimony.

She had envisioned her secret Swiss bank accounts unlocking, allowing her expensive team of high-powered attorneys to post a multi-million-dollar bond.

Instead, the heavy steel security doors at the end of the cell block clanged open with a deafening hydraulic screech.

Four armed tactical officers marched into the hallway, followed immediately by Chief Michael Reynolds and two federal investigators from the Department of Justice.

Chief Reynolds stopped directly outside Victoria’s barred cell, his face cold, hard, and devoid of the slightest trace of sympathy.

Victoria scrambled up from the steel cot, rushing to the bars and gripping the painted iron with white-knuckled desperation.

"Chief Reynolds! Finally!" she gasped, her voice cracked, hoarse, and shaking with desperate anticipation.

"Did my lawyer arrive with the bail reduction paperwork? Where is Vance? Why hasn't he called me?" she demanded hysterically.

Chief Reynolds looked at her through the steel mesh, his eyes steady and unyielding.

"Donald Vance resigned as your legal representative two hours ago, Victoria," Reynolds informed her flatly.

Victoria’s jaw dropped, her breath catching painfully in her throat as if she had been struck across the chest.

"He... he resigned? That is impossible! I pay him ten thousand dollars a day!" she shrieked.

"Mr. Vance resigned because the United States Department of Justice froze every single dollar in your offshore accounts at three o'clock this morning," Reynolds stated.

"Julian Sterling was arrested in Switzerland with your master ledgers, and your hit team on the canyon highway was taken into custody without a single shot fired by your targets," Reynolds added.

Victoria’s face drained of every drop of blood, turning a ghastly, sickening shade of chalk white.

She stumbled backward two steps, her knees buckling beneath her until she crashed heavily onto the cold concrete floor.

"No... no, no, Julian would never talk... he is a professional..." she whimpered, shaking her head in frantic denial.

"Sterling sang like a canary within forty minutes of his arrest to avoid extradition to an American supermax," the federal agent beside Reynolds interjected.

"He provided our team with encrypted voice memos, text instructions, and wire transfer logs confirming you ordered the assassination of Arthur and Ryan Anderson," the agent revealed.

Chief Reynolds signaled to the corrections officers flanking him.

"Open cell four," Reynolds commanded.

The iron lock clicked open with a heavy, final clatter, and two female deputies stepped into the small enclosure with stainless steel handcuffs and leg irons.

"Stand up and face the wall, inmate Anderson," one of the deputies ordered sharply.

"Don't touch me! You can't put me in chains! Do you know who I am?" Victoria screeched, flailing her arms like a feral animal trapped in a corner.

The two deputies moved with practiced, mechanical efficiency, twisting her arms behind her back and snapping the cold steel cuffs around her wrists with a sharp click.

They dropped her to her knees, securing heavy chains around her ankles and linking them to a leather transport belt around her waist.

Victoria sobbed hysterically, her platinum hair hanging in greasy strands over her tear-streaked, blotchy face.

"Arthur... let me talk to Arthur! He loves me! He will understand if I explain everything to him!" she begged, tears streaming down her hollow cheeks.

Chief Reynolds stepped into the cell, looking down at the broken, chained figure who had once terrorized our family with an iron fist.

"Arthur Anderson doesn't love you, Victoria," Chief Reynolds said with cutting clarity.

"Arthur Anderson is currently standing in courtroom eight hundred of the federal courthouse, waiting to testify against you," Reynolds revealed.

"He doesn't want to hear your voice; he wants to hear the sound of the cell door locking behind you for the rest of your life," Reynolds added.

The deputies hoisted Victoria to her feet, her shackled legs shuffling clumsily against the concrete floor as they dragged her into the corridor.

As she was paraded past the other occupied cells, inmates banged their metal cups against the bars, jeering and laughing at the fallen socialite.

The woman who had dumped a bucket of filthy mud over my head to prove her superiority was now shuffling through the bowels of a county jail, chained like a common violent felon.

Her designer gowns, her diamond necklaces, her social influence, and her fabricated empire were gone forever.

There was no limousine waiting outside.

There was only the reinforced federal transport van, its reinforced steel doors waiting to carry her to her public day of judgment.
