Chapter 12 - The Zurich Intercept

By three o'clock that afternoon, the twenty-fourth floor of the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building had become an impenetrable fortress of federal authority.

Two armed United States Marshals stood guard outside the glass-paneled conference room overlooking the sprawling skyline of downtown Los Angeles.

Inside, three senior forensic accountants from the Internal Revenue Service worked alongside special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Arthur sat at the head of the long mahogany conference table, flanked by Ryan on his right and me on his left.

Spread across the polished surface were hundreds of pages of bank statements, shipping manifests, and cryptographic transaction ledgers.

The room remained pin-drop silent except for the rhythmic clicking of computer keys and the rustle of declassified financial records.

Special Agent Sarah Vance, the lead investigator on federal financial crimes, set a steaming mug of black coffee beside Arthur's documents.

"Mr. Anderson, thanks to your son's swift intervention and the burner phone seized during the canyon ambush, we cracked the Panama server within two hours," Agent Vance explained.

She touched a remote control, illuminating the massive high-definition wall monitor at the end of the room.

A complex web of red lines and offshore bank logos appeared on the screen, centered around the name Julian Sterling.

"Julian Sterling wasn't just liquidating Victoria’s stolen assets," Agent Vance continued, tracing a line with her laser pointer.

"For the past three years, Victoria has been operating a sophisticated embezzlement pipeline directly out of Anderson Global Logistics," the agent revealed.

Ryan leaned forward, his blue eyes narrowing as he scanned the dates and corporate entity names.

"She created forty-two shell companies registered in the British Virgin Islands and the Cook Islands," Ryan observed, pointing to the transaction clusters.

"Every time my father approved an international shipping contract to Rotterdam or Singapore, Victoria altered the secondary bills of lading," Ryan deduced.

"Exactly," Agent Vance confirmed, nodding with grim admiration for Ryan’s sharp business acumen.

"She skimmed three percent off every major freight route, funneling the stolen revenue directly into a private numbered vault at Banque Cantonale de Genève in Zurich," Vance explained.

"How much did she manage to siphon before we caught her, Agent Vance?" Arthur asked, his voice low and dangerous.

"Eighty-four million dollars, Mr. Anderson," Agent Vance answered without blinking.

I caught my breath, feeling an icy chill run down my spine as the full scale of Victoria's insatiable greed came into focus.

While I was forced to clean outdoor furniture and endure her sadistic physical abuse, she was stealing a multi-million-dollar fortune right from under our father's nose.

She had never loved our father; she had viewed our entire family as a resource to be harvested and then destroyed.

"What about the contingency protocol she activated from her jail cell?" Ryan asked, his fingers drumming against the mahogany table.

"That was her fail-safe to liquidate the Zurich vault and vanish into non-extradition territory," Vance stated.

"Sterling had dispatched a courier team to the Geneva branch with forged power-of-attorney documents carrying Mr. Anderson's counterfeit signature," Vance explained.

"Were they successful?" Arthur asked, leaning back against his leather executive chair.

Agent Vance allowed a sharp, triumphant smile to touch her lips.

"Thanks to the emergency freeze your Swiss physicians helped us execute, Swiss federal police intercepted the courier twenty minutes ago at the Geneva international terminal," Vance revealed.

She tapped another key on the remote, bringing up a split-screen video feed from the Swiss authorities.

The monitor showed a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit being pinned against a marble wall inside the private terminal, his leather briefcase pried from his fingers.

"That is Julian Sterling himself," Agent Vance announced, her voice filled with professional satisfaction.

"Inside his briefcase, Swiss authorities recovered sixty-two million dollars in bearer bonds, four forged European Union diplomatic passports, and the master ledger," Vance added.

"The master ledger contains Victoria’s handwritten authorization for every single stolen transaction, including the hit contracts placed on your lives," Vance confirmed.

Arthur closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, heavy exhale that seemed to release months of accumulated poison from his soul.

"She thought she was playing chess," Arthur murmured, opening his piercing blue eyes to look at Ryan and me.

"She did not realize that every move she made was being recorded by the people she despised most," the patriarch said.

"Agent Vance," Ryan spoke up, his voice ringing with absolute finality.

"What are the formal charges that will be presented before the grand jury tomorrow morning?" Ryan asked.

Agent Vance turned back to her master file, flipping through the thick stack of criminal indictments.

"Federal racketeering, grand larceny, international wire fraud, attempted murder for financial gain, and two counts of conspiracy to commit witness murder," Vance read.

"Under federal sentencing guidelines, there is zero possibility of an early release or supervised probation," Vance stated.

"Victoria Anderson is looking at a mandatory life sentence in a federal maximum-security penitentiary," Vance concluded.

Arthur reached over, placing his hand gently on top of mine, his thumb brushing over my mother's sapphire ring.

"Tomorrow morning, my children," Arthur said softly, his voice carrying the immovable weight of a father’s eternal protection.

"Tomorrow, we close the iron doors on her forever," Arthur promised.
