Chapter 8 - The Breach in the Dark

From the darkness of the mezzanine balcony above the library, a red laser dot appeared on the center of Julian Cross’s forehead.
A split-second later, two more laser dots painted his chest.
"Drop the weapon, Cross," a cold, calm voice commanded from the shadows.
It was Marcus Vance.
Julian’s eyes widened. He didn't drop the gun; instead, his prison-hardened reflexes kicked in with terrifying speed. He threw himself sideways behind the heavy oak desk just as three suppressed rifle rounds tore through the leather chair where he had been standing, sending plumes of goose-feather stuffing into the air.
*Pfft! Pfft! Pfft!*
"Power’s back!" Vance roared over the tactical radio.
Instantly, the emergency auxiliary lights flashed to life, bathing the library in a harsh, pulsing amber glow.
Daniel lunged forward, grabbing Vanessa by the arm and dragging her across the room toward the corridor. He didn't do it out of mercy—he did it because she had to face justice, because he needed her alive to confess and sign away every claim she had ever forged against his daughter’s name.
"Let go of me!" Vanessa screamed, clawing at Daniel’s hands with her manicured nails. "Julian! Kill him!"
Julian popped up from behind the desk, firing two rounds through the drywall near Daniel’s head. Plaster exploded into dust, raining down on Daniel’s shoulders. Daniel drew his Kimber .45 from his holster and returned fire—three deafening, unsuppressed gunshots that boomed like thunder in the enclosed room, splintering the oak desk and driving Julian back into cover.
"Vance! Cut off the exits!" Daniel yelled, shoving Vanessa through the double doors into the grand salon.
Vanessa scrambled to her feet on the marble floor. Seeing that Daniel was distracted by Julian’s gunfire, she kicked off her designer flats and sprinted toward the glass patio doors leading to the swimming pool.
"Daniel!" Vance yelled from the mezzanine above, reloading his tactical carbine. "Cross is moving through the service pantry! He’s trying to flank you!"
Daniel didn't hesitate. He knew the layout of his estate better than any intruder. He sprinted through the formal dining room, cutting through the shadows toward the rear terrace.
Outside, a light drizzle had begun to fall, mingling with the chlorinated steam rising from the heated swimming pool. The underwater LED lights were glowing a deep, blood-red—a preset emergency security mode.
Vanessa was on the patio deck, slipping on the wet travertine tiles, scrambling toward the outer garden gates.
"VANESSA!" Daniel roared, stepping onto the terrace, the rain soaking his dress shirt.
Vanessa stopped. She turned around, her hair plastered to her bruised face, the blood from her lip dripping onto her torn cashmere coat. She reached behind her back and pulled out a small, snub-nosed .38 revolver from the waistband of her jeans—a backup weapon she had kept hidden from everyone.
"Stay back, Daniel!" she screamed hysterically, raising the gun with two trembling hands. "I will shoot you! I swear to God I will kill you!"
"You don't have the stomach for it, Sarah," Daniel said, advancing slowly, his Kimber raised, locked onto her chest. "You only attack children when their backs are turned."
"I should have made sure she hit the concrete!" Vanessa shrieked, her face contorting into an expression of pure, demonic madness. "I should have broken her neck with my bare hands!"
A sudden, violent crash of glass shattered behind them.
Julian Cross burst through the floor-to-ceiling salon windows, covered in glass shards, bleeding from a shoulder wound where Vance’s bullet had grazed him. He was completely unhinged, driven by the instinct of a cornered predator.
He didn't aim at Daniel.
He aimed straight at Vanessa.

"Nobody robs me and walks away!" Julian roared.
