Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Pen

Daniel did not flinch. He remained seated, his posture composed, his eyes fixed on the woman who had invaded his life like a parasite.

"You really thought you could kill Sophie and get away with it?" Daniel asked quietly.

Vanessa snorted, pulling a gold cigarette case from her designer handbag and lighting a thin cigarette with casual defiance. She blew a thick plume of smoke directly toward Daniel’s face.

"It was supposed to be clean," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with venomous nonchalance. "Kids drown in luxury pools every single day in Southern California. Unlatched gate, unattended minor, tragic loss. The community cries, the husband falls into a depressive coma, and the devoted stepmother handles the estate."

"You threw her forty feet onto concrete," Daniel said, his fists clenching so tight the nails dug into his palms.

"I had to improvise!" she snapped, her eyes flaring with sudden, psychopathic rage. "That miserable little brat was standing outside my dressing room while Julian was demanding five million dollars! She heard him call me Sarah! She was going to run straight to you the moment you walked through that door! What was I supposed to do, Daniel? Let an eight-year prison bird ruin a two-hundred-million-dollar score?"

"You could have left," Daniel said. "You could have taken your jewelry, taken your allowance, and run."

"And live like a peasant on a two-million-dollar prenup?" she mocked, laughing bitterly. "I spent fourteen months playing mommy to that annoying, whiny child! I listened to you talk about Elena every single anniversary! I pretended to care about your boring tech board meetings! I earned that money, Daniel! Every single cent of it!"

"You won't see a dime," Daniel said. "The police have your real name. They have the lighter. The house is surrounded by my private security. You’re going to prison for attempted capital murder."

Vanessa didn't look afraid. In fact, she looked triumphant.

She reached into her handbag, but instead of a weapon, she pulled out a folded legal document with blue court backing. She tossed it onto the coffee table between them.

"Take a look, darling," she purred.

Daniel leaned forward and opened the document. It was an amendment to the Carter Family Trust, dated three months ago. It bore his signature and the notary seal of his family attorney, Arthur Pendelton. The amendment stated that in the event of Sophie Carter’s death or permanent incapacitation, full discretionary control of the eighty-million-dollar liquid trust transferred immediately to Vanessa Carter, with no waiting period.

"Pendelton is on my payroll, Daniel," Vanessa whispered with a wicked grin. "He’s been skimming from your corporate accounts for five years. I found out, and I used it to make him notarize this beauty. The signature is an exact forensic match to yours—scanned from your merger contracts. Legally, the money is already committed."

"Sophie is alive, Vanessa," Daniel said coldly. "The clause is void."

"For now," Vanessa whispered.

At that exact moment, the lights inside the mansion flickered and died.

The heavy hum of the air conditioning shut down. The refrigerator in the kitchen went silent. The backup generators did not kick on. The entire estate was plunged into impenetrable, pitch-black darkness.

Daniel’s instincts flared. He immediately rolled off the sofa onto the hardwood floor, reaching for his Kimber .45 in his shoulder holster.

The unmistakable sound of a heavy steel slide racking echoed from the shadowed archway of the library.

"Don't move, Mr. Carter," a voice growled from the darkness.

A beam from a high-powered tactical flashlight clicked on, blinding Daniel. Standing in the doorway, blocking the only exit to the library, was Julian 'Viper' Cross.

He held a suppressed semi-automatic pistol leveled directly at Daniel’s chest.
