Chapter 7 - A Deadly Dinner

Vanessa let out a sharp, vindictive laugh from the shadows behind the sofa.

"Did you really think I was meeting him at the marina, Daniel?" she mocked, stepping into the flashlight’s beam. "I knew Vance had my phone tapped the second the cops left this afternoon! You think I’m an amateur? That phone call was for your benefit. I wanted you to think you had until midnight so you’d let your guard down."

Julian Cross stepped further into the library, his combat boots making no sound on the oriental rug. Up close, the man was terrifying. His face was scarred, his nose broken and reset crookedly, and the coiled viper tattoo on his throat seemed to undulate with every breath he took. His eyes were cold, dead, and calculating.

"You talk too much, Sarah," Julian said, his gravelly voice low and steady. His gun remained locked onto Daniel’s heart. "Where’s the safe?"

"Right behind the bookshelf," Vanessa said eagerly, pointing to the wall. "Ten million in bearer bonds, gold bullion, and untraceable diamonds. Just like I promised you."

"And what about him?" Julian nodded toward Daniel.

"We stage a home invasion," Vanessa said without a shred of hesitation. Her voice was flat, matter-of-fact, chilling in its calculation. "A brutal robbery gone wrong. Daniel fought back and was killed. Then, we take a trip to Cedars-Sinai. A little potassium chloride into Sophie’s IV line while the hospital is on night shift. Tragic cardiac arrest caused by secondary drowning complications. Within forty-eight hours, I am the sole surviving heir to three hundred million dollars."

Daniel looked past the barrel of the gun, locking eyes with Julian Cross.

"Julian," Daniel said, keeping his voice steady, refusing to show even a flicker of fear. "She abandoned you eight years ago. She took four hundred thousand dollars of your money, got plastic surgery, and let you rot in Pelican Bay for nearly a decade. Do you really think she’s going to share ten million with you?"

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, but the gun didn't waver.

"Shut up, Daniel!" Vanessa snapped, stepping closer to Julian. "Don't listen to him! Julian and I have known each other since we were eighteen! We’re partners!"

"Partners?" Daniel scoffed, looking directly at Julian. "Ask her about the marina, Julian. Ask her why she arranged for two armed mercenaries from a private cartel outfit to wait at Slip 42 tonight. She wasn't planning on running away with you. She was planning on having you executed the moment you stepped onto that dock."

Julian’s gaze flickered to Vanessa. A tiny, dangerous twitch appeared at the corner of his jaw. "What is he talking about, Sarah?"

"He’s lying!" Vanessa shrieked, panic suddenly cracking her voice. "He’s trying to divide us! Shoot him, Julian! Shoot him right now and open the damn safe!"

"Check her purse, Julian," Daniel said calmly. "The burner phone in her pocket. Check the text messages to an encrypted number saved as 'V.M.' It’s a clean-up crew out of Tijuana. She promised them half a million to take your body out to the deep channel."

Julian reached out with his left hand, grabbed Vanessa by the collar of her turtleneck, and violently slammed her against the heavy mahogany desk.

"Hey! Let go of me!" she screamed.

Julian shoved his hand into her designer bag, pulled out her secondary phone, and flicked the screen on with his thumb. The glow of the screen illuminated his hardened face.

He scrolled through the messages for five agonizing seconds.

His expression went from cold professionalism to pure, homicidal fury.

"Slip 42," Julian read aloud, his voice dropping an octave into a guttural growl. *"‘Target will be wearing a black tactical shirt. Make sure he doesn't breathe when he hits the water.’"*

Julian slowly lowered the phone. He turned to look at the woman he had spent eight years in prison protecting.

"You were going to clip me," Julian whispered.

"Julian, no! That was a contingency! Only if you threatened me—"

Before Vanessa could finish her sentence, Julian’s fist shot out like a sledgehammer, catching her square across the jaw. Vanessa collapsed onto the Persian rug with a sickening thud, blood spurting from her split lip, her designer persona shattered into pathetic whimpers.

"You always were a lying, selfish snake, Sarah," Julian hissed, turning his gun away from Daniel and aiming it directly at Vanessa’s forehead.

"Wait," Daniel said.

Julian froze. He slowly turned his head back toward Daniel, the gun still raised. "You want to beg for her life, billionaire? After what she did to your kid?"

May you like

"No," Daniel replied, his eyes flashing in the dim flashlight beam. "I want you to look behind you."
