Chapter 4 - The Shadow from Blackthorn Prison

Daniel stared at the monitor, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the console.

The woman he had shared a bed with for over a year, the woman who wore haute couture to charity galas and played the role of an elegant stepmother, was a convicted felon and the wife of an armed robber.

"How did she slip through the background checks?" Daniel growled, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. "I paid top dollar to the premier vetting agency in Manhattan before we got engaged!"

"She stole an identity, Daniel," Vance explained, pulling up two side-by-side records. "The real Vanessa Sterling died of a drug overdose in an unlicensed clinic in Tijuana twelve years ago. Our 'Vanessa'—real name Sarah Jenkins, married to Julian Cross—stole Sterling’s social security number, clean credit history, and college credentials. When Julian took the fall for a bank robbery in Arizona that went sideways with a dead security guard, Sarah vanished with nearly four hundred thousand dollars of the unrecovered loot. She used the cash to reinvent herself: plastic surgery, diction coaching, high-end finishing schools in Switzerland."

"She manufactured an entire persona," Daniel realized, disgust churning in his gut. "A blue-blood heiress."

"She hunted you, Daniel," Vance said coldly. "She didn't meet you by chance at that gallery in Manhattan. She spent six months tracking your grief after your first wife died. She knew you were vulnerable, desperate to give your daughter a maternal figure, and sitting on an empire worth hundreds of millions. She married you to cash out."

"And Julian Cross?"

"Julian was supposed to stay in maximum security for twenty-five years," Vance replied, bringing up recent prison correspondence logs. "He won an appeal on a prosecutorial misconduct technicality. He got out seventeen years early. And the first thing he did was track down his runaway wife who abandoned him and kept the score."

Daniel connected the pieces with horrifying clarity. "He found her here. In Bel-Air. Living in a thirty-million-dollar mansion."

"He wanted his cut. Or worse, he wanted everything," Vance said. "My guess? Julian showed up unannounced today. He blackmailed her. Threatened to expose her entire real identity to you and the authorities if she didn't pay him off immediately. Vanessa knew she couldn't access your fortune while you and Sophie were alive. The prenuptial agreement gave her a modest stipend upon divorce, but nothing close to what Julian was demanding."

"So she tried to kill my daughter to initiate the inheritance clause," Daniel spat, the bile rising in his throat. "She thought if Sophie was dead, she could stage an accident for me next."

Suddenly, Vance’s phone buzzed with an alert. He glanced down at the screen, his expression instantly sharpening.

"Daniel. We have a tap on Vanessa’s burner phone. She just made an outbound call from the guest suite."

"Play it."

Vance routed the audio through the bunker’s studio speakers.

The line crackled, followed by Vanessa’s frantic, hyperventilating voice:

*"...you idiot! Why did you stand on the balcony? He saw you! Daniel saw you!"*

A deep, gravelly voice answered, dripping with menace. *"You pushed a six-year-old off a roof, Sarah. You’re completely out of your mind. I came for my five million, not to be an accessory to the murder of a child."*

*"She heard us, Julian!"* Vanessa hissed, her voice venomous. *"She was going to tell Daniel you were here! I did what I had to do! But the brat didn't die! She’s at Cedars-Sinai right now, and she’s talking! Daniel knows something is wrong!"*

*"Then your little Cinderella fairy tale is over,"* Julian replied coldly. *"Wire the money to the offshore account in the Caymans by midnight, or I go to the cops myself. I’ll trade your head for total immunity."*

*"I don't have five million in liquid cash, Julian! You know Daniel controls all the primary accounts!"* Vanessa cried out, desperation cracking her voice. *"Meet me tonight. At the marina. Slip 42. I have two million in diamonds and bearer bonds in my personal safe. Take them and get out of the country!"*

A long pause hung on the line.

*"Midnight, Sarah,"* Julian said. *"If you bring cops, or if your billionaire husband is waiting, I swear to God I will gut you like a fish."*

The call clicked dead.

Daniel stood completely still in the dark bunker, the blue light of the monitors reflecting off his eyes. The rage that had been boiling inside him transformed into something cold, clinical, and deadly.

"She’s meeting him tonight," Daniel said softly.

"We notify the FBI, Daniel," Vance advised immediately. "We have the wiretap, we have the identity theft, we have attempted murder. They can intercept them at the marina."

"No," Daniel said. He turned to Vance, his eyes burning with an icy resolve. "The FBI will arrest them, there will be trials, appeals, lawyers arguing diminished capacity, and Vanessa will spend five years in a minimum-security facility while Sophie lives the rest of her life in fear."

"What are you saying?" Vance asked, a wary tension in his voice.

"I’m saying Vanessa tried to drown my daughter in my own pool," Daniel whispered. "She thinks she’s meeting Julian at the marina. But she’s not leaving this house."
