Chapter 9 - Wrath of the Devil

With a sharp intake of breath, Isabella engaged the core muscles she had spent six agonizing months rebuilding in secret.
Her right foot found purchase on the hardwood floor. Then her left.
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. His entire body turned to stone, his amber eyes wide with utter, disbelieving shock. "Bella... your... your legs..."
Isabella grimaced, the fiery sting of reawakened nerves shooting up her spine like lightning bolts. But she didn't stop. She locked her knees. She pushed off the edge of the mattress with her hands, bearing her own weight.
For the first time in three years, Isabella Moretti stood upright on her own two feet.
She stood tall, slender, fragile, yet radiating an undeniable, radiant power. The morning sunlight poured through the bay window, framing her in a halo of winter gold.
Adrian collapsed back onto his haunches, his hands flying to his mouth, a ragged gasp tearing from his chest. "A miracle... my God... Bella..."
"It wasn't a miracle, Adrian," Isabella said, her voice shaking with effort and emotion as she balanced herself. "It was work. It was hours of screaming into pillows while you were away in your boardrooms. It was falling on the floor of my bathroom a hundred times and dragging myself back up by the sink. I did it because I wanted to walk back to the man I fell in love with."
She took one slow, trembling step forward.
Her foot landed firmly on the cedar planks.
"I didn't want your empire, Adrian," she said, taking a second step, closing the distance between them. "I didn't want your guards, your bank accounts, or your blood money. I wanted my husband. I wanted the boy who promised me pistachio ice cream on Michigan Avenue. I wanted a partner, not a martyr."
She took a third step, reaching the spot where Adrian knelt on the floor.
Her strength wavered, her knees buckling under the sudden exhaustion of her healing nerves.
Adrian moved instantly, catching her waist, pulling her gently down into his lap on the soft sheepskin rug before the roaring fire. He held her close, burying his face in the crook of her neck, his body trembling violently as he inhaled the scent of lavender and rain that belonged solely to her.
"I am so sorry," Adrian wept into her skin, his hands cradling her back, pressing her body against his with an intensity that bordered on reverence. "I am so sorry, Bella. I will burn the empire down. I will walk away from the syndicate. I will sign everything over to Luca. I don't care about Chicago. I don't care about the throne. Just let me be your husband. Let me be the father this child deserves."
Isabella rested her trembling hands on the sides of his face, tilting his head up so his tear-streaked amber eyes met hers.
"You really mean it?" she whispered, her thumb brushing away a tear from his scarred cheekbone. "You would walk away from the crown?"
"There is no crown without you, Isabella," Adrian stated, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding conviction. "Without you, I am just a devil waiting to die in an empty mansion. You are my home. You have always been my home."
Isabella looked deep into his eyes and saw the walls finally gone. The cold mafia don was dead. The man who remained was the one she had sacrificed her body to protect—broken, scarred, but entirely, desperately hers.
Slowly, Isabella leaned down and pressed her lips against his.
The kiss was desperate, tasting of salt, tears, and years of unspoken longing. It was a baptism of fire and forgiveness, washing away the blood of Michigan Avenue, the cold words spoken in the study, and the suffocating shadows that had held them hostage for three long years.
When they finally parted, breathing heavily, their foreheads resting against one another, the heavy wooden front door of the cabin opened softly.
Luca stood in the doorway, a look of profound relief on his face, holding a thick leather dossier under his arm. Elena stood behind him, a bandage on her forehead, sipping a mug of hot coffee.
"Boss," Luca said quietly, stepping inside and closing the door against the winter chill. "The cleaning crew finished in Chicago. Marco Rossi's lieutenants have surrendered unconditionally. The family has disbanded. The North and South Sides are completely under your control."
Adrian didn't let go of Isabella. He kept his arm wrapped securely around her waist, his other hand resting gently over her womb.
"Give it to Salvatore," Adrian said without turning his head.
Luca blinked. "Sir?"
"You heard me, Luca," Adrian said calmly. "Liquidate my holdings in the city. Transfer sixty percent to the offshore trust for the baby, twenty percent to the syndicate retirement fund, and give the command of the family to Salvatore. The Moretti reign in Chicago ends today."
Luca stared at Adrian for three long seconds, seeing the absolute peace in his leader's eyes—a peace he had never witnessed in a decade of service. A slow, respectful smile touched Luca’s lips.
"It will be done, Don Adrian," Luca said, bowing his head. "And what about Celeste?"
Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly, but Isabella placed a gentle hand over his fist, softening the darkness before it could consume him.
"Hand her over to the federal authorities," Isabella spoke, her voice clear and authoritative. "Give them the ledgers she kept for Marco Rossi. Let her spend the rest of her youth in a federal penitentiary in West Virginia, watching the world pass her by through iron bars."
Adrian looked down at Isabella, a soft, devoted smile curving his lips.

"You heard the Boss," Adrian told Luca. "Make it happen."
