Chapter 3 - The Venom in Silk

Within sixty seconds, the Moretti estate shifted from a dormant mansion into a militarized zone. Alarms screamed throughout the twenty-acre grounds. Floodlights illuminated the sprawling lawn, turning the rainy darkness into a blinding white glare. Dozens of men in black tactical gear sprinted across the courtyards, their assault rifles raised, dogs barking frantically at the perimeter gates.

Adrian stormed into the central surveillance hub in the basement, still clutching the ultrasound image in his left hand, crushed slightly against his palm as if trying to merge the paper with his flesh.

Luca, his head of personal security and trusted right-hand man for a decade, sat frantically hammering on the multi-monitor console. His face was drenched in cold sweat.

"Talk to me!" Adrian bellowed, slamming a fist onto the steel console, cracking the plastic bezel of a monitor.

"Boss... the north gate cameras were looped for seven minutes," Luca stammered, pulling up live logs. "The service elevator was used at 9:42 PM. She exited through the catering bay doors into the service alley behind the garage."

"Who helped her?" Adrian snarled, his veins bulging against his neck. "She is in a wheelchair, Luca! She cannot walk! Did a guard carry her? Did a driver take her? Tell me who betrayed me, and I will hang their family from the Navy Pier by dawn!"

"No one, Boss," Luca whispered, turning the screen to face Adrian. "Look."

Adrian stared at the grainy black-and-white footage.

The rain was pouring in sheets. A lone figure in an oversized cashmere coat was pushing the wheels of her chair with ferocious, desperate strength through the gravel alleyway. Water soaked her hair, plastering it to her pale face. There was no hesitation in her movements. No glance backward. She rolled down the service incline, reached the blind spot near the street, and disappeared into a black sedan that had pulled up for precisely three seconds.

The license plate was smeared with mud. Unreadable.

"Enhance it!" Adrian screamed. "Track the traffic cameras on Sheridan Road! Call the Chief of Police! Put a city-wide Amber Alert, an executive level search—"

"Adrian?"

A soft, hesitant voice spoke from the doorway of the surveillance room.

Adrian whipped his head around. Celeste stood there, clutching her silk shawl, her eyes wide with what appeared to be innocent confusion.

"What is happening? The guards won't let my car leave the gate," Celeste whimpered, taking a step toward him. "Adrian, you're terrifying everyone. What did that woman do now?"

Adrian moved so fast that Luca didn't even have time to reach for his weapon.

In a fraction of a second, Adrian crossed the room, his large, scarred hand wrapping around Celeste’s slender throat. He lifted her off her feet, slamming her against the reinforced concrete wall of the security bunker. The impact knocked the wind from her lungs, her hands frantically clawing at his iron wrist.

"Boss! Adrian, wait!" Luca shouted, raising his hands, terrified Adrian would snap her neck on the spot.

"You knew," Adrian growled, his voice a low, guttural vibration that made the air in the room feel heavy with ozone and death. "You knew she was outside the door."

Celeste’s eyes bulged, her face turning crimson, then purple. "A-Adrian... p-please... I don't..."

"You raised your voice," Adrian hissed, his grip tightening until her trachea clicked. "You moved closer to me. You provoked the words out of my mouth. You saw her shadow through the glass, didn't you? DIDN'T YOU?!"

"Adrian, she's suffocating!" Luca warned, stepping forward cautiously.

Adrian slammed her back against the wall once more before dropping her. Celeste collapsed to the linoleum floor, coughing violently, dragging air into her starved lungs, clutching her bruised neck with weeping hysteria.

Adrian stood over her like a grim reaper, drawing his custom 1911 pistol from his shoulder holster, pulling back the slide with a clean, terrifying *clack*. He leveled the muzzle between her tear-filled eyes.

"Give me one reason why I shouldn't paint this wall with your brains, Celeste," Adrian whispered. "Where did she go? Who took her?"

Celeste looked up into Adrian’s eyes and saw no humanity left—only the feral, untamed monster that the underworld called *Il Diavolo*. She began to laugh, a wet, ragged, spiteful laugh that rose in pitch until it echoed off the concrete walls.

"You blind, arrogant bastard," Celeste choked out, blood speckling her lip where she had bitten her tongue. "You think you're a king? You think you control Chicago?"

Adrian cocked the hammer. "Speak."

"I didn't need to plan her escape," Celeste spat, her beautiful face contorting with years of hidden, festering hatred. "She ran because she finally saw the monster you are! But if you want to know who is waiting for her... why don't you ask Marco Rossi?"

Adrian’s breath stopped.

Marco Rossi. The head of the South Side Syndicate. The man who had ordered the hit three years ago that paralyzed Isabella. The man Adrian had spent three years waging a covert, bloody war against.

"Rossi doesn't have her," Adrian snarled.

"Not yet," Celeste sneered, her eyes gleaming with lethal satisfaction. "Marco knew she was your only weakness, Adrian. He knew that as long as that crippled bitch was alive, your empire had a fracture. I was Marco's eyes in your house. And now? Isabella is alone in the cold, unprotected, helpless. And Marco's hounds have been tracking her burner phone for the last thirty minutes."

Adrian’s world seemed to shatter into jagged shards. He didn't fire the gun. He lowered it slowly, turning his bloodshot eyes toward Luca.

"Take her to the cellar," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm—the silence before an apocalyptic storm. "Strip her of everything. If she dies before I get answers, I will execute every man on this security team."

Adrian turned back toward the stairs, his coat billowing behind him.

"Luca," Adrian commanded without looking back. "Call the captains. Tell them Chicago is now a free-fire zone. Every Rossi territory, every warehouse, every safehouse—burn them to the ground. And find my wife."
