Chapter 4 - Ghost in the Blizzard

The black sedan rattled as it sped southward along the snow-dusted, slick asphalt of Interstate 94.

Inside the passenger seat, Isabella Moretti leaned her head against the cold glass of the window, watching the streetlights of Chicago blur into long ribbons of amber and red. The heater blew faint, dry air, but she couldn't stop the shivering that shook her frame from the chest down.

"Drink this, Bella. You're going into shock."

The man behind the wheel was Elena Vance—a woman with sharp, androgynous features, short-cropped blonde hair, and calloused hands. Elena had been Isabella’s closest friend since their days at the Juilliard conservatory, before Isabella’s world had been swallowed whole by the mafia prince Adrian Moretti. Elena had walked away from high society, choosing a life as an independent security contractor for VIPs fleeing abusive cartels.

Elena thrust a thermos of hot chamomile tea into Isabella’s trembling hands.

Isabella took a sip, the warmth burning her throat, forcing her back into reality. "Did he follow us?"

"No," Elena replied, checking her rearview mirror for the hundredth time. "The loop on the estate's security feed gave us a seven-minute window. By the time Moretti realized you weren't in your bed, we were already past the downtown toll plaza. But Bella... you know who he is. Adrian Moretti doesn't lose things. He doesn't let possessions walk away."

*Possessions.*

The word stung, but it was accurate. That was all she had ever been to Adrian since the day she took that hollow-point slug through her spine—an item of debt, a broken heirloom he felt obligated to polish and protect out of shame.

"I am not a possession," Isabella whispered, her hand moving instinctively to rest upon her flat lower abdomen. "And neither is this child."

Elena’s eyes darted down to Isabella’s stomach, her expression softening with profound sympathy. "You really are pregnant? The doctors in Switzerland told you your lower pelvic nerve damage made carrying to term nearly impossible without massive complications."

"The baby is fighting," Isabella said softly, a small, fierce smile touching her chapped lips. "The heartbeat is strong. If this baby has the strength to survive inside a broken body, I have the strength to give it a life away from blood, bullets, and lies."

"Where do we go?" Elena asked, tapping the steering wheel. "Every commercial airport within three states is controlled by Moretti's customs contacts. Train stations have his spotters. The docks are locked tight."

"We go where he would never look," Isabella said, opening the glove compartment and retrieving an old, weathered road atlas. She pointed to a remote region in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan—a secluded, snow-bound cabin nestled in the dense pine forests near Lake Superior. "My grandfather bought this property fifty years ago under an old family name. It's off the grid. No digital footprint. No ties to the Moretti syndicate."

"It's a ten-hour drive through a blizzard, Bella," Elena warned. "And your physical therapy? Your medication for nerve pain?"

"I don't need the pain medication anymore," Isabella said firmly.

Elena glanced over, raising an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

Isabella took a deep, steadying breath. Slowly, under the heavy fabric of her cashmere coat, she did something that would have brought the entire Moretti empire to its knees if they had witnessed it.

She flexed her right calf.

Beneath her woolen trousers, the muscle tightened. Then, with an agonizing, deliberate effort that bead sweat on her forehead, Isabella lifted her right foot two inches off the car floorboard, holding it suspended in the air for five full seconds before letting it drop back down.

Elena gasped, swerving slightly before steadying the vehicle. "Bella! Your legs... you're getting motor function back?!"

Tears finally welled in Isabella’s eyes, spilling over her eyelashes and tracing down her pale cheeks.

"Six months," Isabella whispered, her voice trembling with the weight of her secret. "Six months ago, the feeling started creeping back into my toes. The specialized neuro-stimulation therapy Adrian paid for... it was working. The nerves began reconnecting. But every time I made progress, every time I thought about telling him, I saw how cold his eyes were. I realized that the only reason he stayed, the only reason he kept me near him, was pity. I wanted to surprise him. I wanted to walk toward him on our anniversary and tell him he was finally free."

She clenched her trembling fists against her lap.

"I wanted to walk to him as a whole woman, not a burden. And tonight... tonight I was going to tell him about the baby and show him that I could stand beside him again. But then I heard him say it. He owes me his life, not his love. If he only stays because I'm broken, then I don't want to be healed in his house. I will learn to walk for my child, Elena. Not for a man who views me as an unpaid bill."

Elena reached over and squeezed Isabella’s hand, her throat tight with emotion. "Then we don't stop until Michigan. We get you to that cabin, and you build your life."

Suddenly, behind them, through the swirling curtain of white snow, two blinding beams of halogen light cut through the dark.

A heavy, modified SUV was closing the distance at terrifying speed.

Elena cursed loudly, slamming her foot down onto the accelerator. "We’ve got company! Damn it, how did they find us so fast?!"

Isabella turned her head toward the rear window. The pursuing vehicle was not one of Adrian’s sleek black Mercedes sedans. It was an armored, matte-black Dodge Ram with bull-bars across the grille.

And on the front fender, illuminated by the flashing road markers, was a spray-painted crimson insignia:

The coiled viper of the Rossi family.
