Chapter 6 - Fratricide in the Cellar

The shockwave from the blow against the loading dock doors rattled the heavy copper pots hanging above the prep stations. Dust sifted down from the acoustic ceiling tiles.

*CLANG! BOOM!*

A second impact buckled the heavy industrial steel door inward, warping the frame. Outside, through the reinforced glass peephole, the glare of halogen high-beams cut through the Chicago rain, illuminating the silhouettes of four men wearing tactical raincoats, carrying short-barreled automatic weapons.

"Matteo! Franco! Positions!" Luca roared, his voice cutting through the panic like an iron scythe.

Matteo instantly kicked over a heavy stainless-steel rolling workstation, turning it into a makeshift barricade twenty feet from the loading door. He drew a Glock 21 from his shoulder holster, chambering a .45-caliber round with a sharp *clack*. Franco sprinted toward the side pantry, covering the blind angle of the service corridor.

"Antonio," Luca barked, drawing a serrated utility blade from his pocket and slicing through his brother’s zip-ties with a single swift movement. "Get Ma and Mia down into the wine vault. Now."

Antonio rubbed his bleeding wrists, staring at Luca with eyes hollowed out by humiliation and terror. "Luca... I don't deserve—"

"I don't give a damn what you deserve!" Luca snarled, grabbing Antonio by the lapels of his ruined designer jacket and slamming him against the prep counter. "You brought this plague into our house, Antonio! You don't get to die until you protect our mother! Get them into the vault, lock the Saint Jude door from the inside, and do not open it until you hear my voice!"

Rosa stood up from her crate. Despite the thunderous blows hammering against the steel door, the old woman did not tremble. She reached out, her hand resting firmly against Luca’s jaw.

"Do not let them burn what your father built, Luca," she said softly in dialect. "Kill the wolves."

"Go, Ma," Luca said, his eyes softening for a fraction of a second before hardening into pure flint.

Mia hesitated, looking at Luca. "Mr. DeLuca, the biometric transfer... it takes ninety seconds once the phone is unlocked. You have to keep her phone within five meters of the terminal."

"I’ll get the phone," Luca said. "Run."

Mia nodded, grabbing Rosa’s arm and pulling the elderly woman toward the cellar staircase. Antonio followed, his head bowed, dragging his feet like a condemned man walking to the gallows.

As the cellar door clicked shut behind them, Vanessa made her move.

With feline speed, she dashed toward the side exit leading to the customer dining room, her hand slipping inside her tailored silk coat to retrieve the encrypted iPhone.

Luca moved faster. He was a big man, but his reflexes were honed by years of back-alley survival. In three strides, he intercepted her near the dishwashing station. His hand clamped around her slender wrist like an iron vise, twisting it upward until the phone slipped from her fingers and clattered onto the wet rubber mat.

"Let me go, you Neanderthal!" Vanessa screeched, clawing at his face with her manicured nails, leaving three bloody tracks down his left cheek. "My uncle’s men will tear this place apart! You’re dead, Luca! You hear me? You’re dead!"

Luca didn't flinch. He didn't strike her. He simply forced her back against the stainless-steel pass, grabbed the fallen iPhone with his free hand, and pressed her trembling thumb against the biometric sensor on the screen.

*BEEP.* The phone unlocked.

Luca tossed the unlocked device onto the expeditor counter right beside the terminal. "Drive’s syncing," he muttered to himself, watching the green progress bar on the monitor jump from ten percent to forty.

*BANG! BANG! BANG!*

The hinges on the loading dock door sheared off in a shower of sparks. The heavy steel door fell inward with a thunderous crash, and two men in black tactical gear burst into the kitchen, automatic weapons raised.

"DROP IT!" Matteo shouted, opening fire instantly from behind the overturned steel workstation.

The kitchen erupted into deafening violence. Gunfire roared in the enclosed space, the muzzle flashes illuminating the stainless steel like strobe lights. Bullets punched through the commercial refrigerators, sending jets of pressurized Freon hissing into the air. Jars of preserved San Marzano tomatoes shattered on the overhead shelves, spraying thick red sauce across the walls like arterial blood.

The first Marcone gunman took two heavy rounds to the chest and collapsed backward onto the loading ramp. The second gunman dove behind the commercial dishwasher, firing short bursts from an MP5 that ripped through the ceiling, raining plaster and shattered fluorescent tubes down onto the floor.

Arthur Vance, still tied to the aluminum prep stool, shrieked in terror as stray rounds punched through the table inches from his head. "DON'T SHOOT! I'M THE LAWYER! I'M ON YOUR SIDE!"

A stray 9mm round tore through Vance’s shoulder. The lawyer tumbled sideways, stool and all, screaming in agony as he hit the slick floor.

From the service corridor, Franco fired three deliberate shots from a 12-gauge shotgun. The blast obliterated the wooden divider behind the dishwasher, sending the second gunman sprawling across the tiles, motionless.

Outside in the alley, the engine of the second SUV roared. Tires screeched against wet asphalt.

"Boss! There’s two more outside!" Matteo yelled, reloading his Glock with practiced speed. "They’re setting incendiary charges at the back gate! They’re going to burn the building down with us inside!"

Luca looked at the kitchen terminal.

*TRANSFER PROGRESS: 78%... 82%...*

Vanessa seized the moment of chaos. She grabbed an eight-inch carbon-steel carving knife from the magnetic strip beside the grill. Her eyes were completely crazed, the refined heiress fully transformed into a cornered, rabid beast.

"If I don't get the money, nobody gets it!" she screamed, lunging at Luca’s neck with the blade.

Luca sidestepped, his left forearm catching her wrist, redirecting the blade into the stainless backsplash with a deafening scrape. He drove his palm forward into her shoulder, sending her crashing against the dry-storage racks. Boxes of flour and pasta cascaded down upon her, burying her designer clothes in white dust.

*TRANSFER PROGRESS: 100%. FUNDS TRANSFERRED TO DELUCA FAMILY IRREVOCABLE TRUST.*

The terminal chimed with a gentle, domestic *ding* that sounded absurdly peaceful amid the gunsmoke and hissing coolant.

Suddenly, the heavy cellar door swung open again.

Antonio stood in the doorway. He wasn't cowering anymore. In his hands, he held Salvatore’s old double-barreled 10-gauge hunting shotgun—the one the old patriarch had kept mounted behind the Saint Jude altar.

"Antonio! What are you doing?" Luca shouted over the ringing in his ears.

Antonio looked at the alleyway where the smell of gasoline was already wafting through the shattered loading dock. He looked at Vanessa, who was coughing white flour out of her lungs, glaring at him with pure hatred. Then, Antonio looked at his older brother.

"Father told you to protect the family, Luca," Antonio said, a calm, terrifying serenity settling over his features. "He never told me to do that. He knew I was only good for making messes."

Before Luca could move, Antonio sprinted past the barricades straight into the rain-swept alley.
