Chapter 4 - The Kitchen Trap

Luca did not touch the envelope immediately. His fingers hovered over the aged paper, his breath steadying into the rhythmic, cold discipline that had kept him alive through two mob wars. Mia stood just behind him at the threshold of the vault, her arms wrapped around herself against the subterranean chill.

"Stay by the door, Mia," Luca instructed softly. "If you hear gunfire, you run up the coal chute behind the boiler. It leads to the alley behind the bakery."

"I'm not leaving Mrs. Rosa," Mia said quietly. Her voice was trembling, but there was an unexpected spine of steel in her words.

Luca glanced back at her, a faint, grim smirk touching the corner of his lips. "You're more DeLuca than my brother is."

He picked up the reel-to-reel tape and switched the ancient audio deck to *PLAY*. The machine hummed to life, the twin spools spinning slowly with a faint mechanical hiss.

After several seconds of static, a voice filled the limestone chamber. It was deep, raspy from five decades of unfiltered Camels, carrying the thick, lyrical cadences of southern Italy. Salvatore.

*‘Luca,’* the voice spoke, and the sound of his dead father sent an electric jolt down Luca’s spine. *‘If you are listening to this, I am already asleep in Mount Carmel. And it means Emilio Marcone has finally made his move on the table.’*

A dry cough rattled through the speaker, followed by the clink of a whiskey glass against wood.

*‘Six months ago, Emilio’s people approached Antonio in Miami. They forgave his sports debts in exchange for one thing: introducing their girl, Vanessa, into our social circle. Antonio is weak, Luca. He is your brother, and you must protect him from the wolves, but you cannot trust him with the bloodline. Vanessa is Emilio’s educated weapon. She has degrees from Wharton and Columbia. She does not come with guns; she comes with contracts, shell corporations, and accountants.’*

Salvatore’s voice grew quieter, strained with the weariness of a dying lion.

*‘Three days ago, I found Digitalis in my tea. The cook didn't put it there. I saw Vanessa leaving the pantry. I did not shoot her because if I kill her, Emilio calls the Five Families to war, and our empire is not ready. You were still learning, Luca. So I played the old man. I drank just enough to let my heart slow down. I made Rosa the fifty-one percent owner through an irrevocable trust that can only be unsealed with her signature and the original master ledger. If they try to steal the restaurants, they will need the book.’*

The tape clicked, a heavy breath rattling through the microphone.

*‘Do not let them take the kitchen, Luca. The kitchen is where we feed the people. If you lose the food, you are just common thugs with guns. Take care of your mother. And tell Antonio... tell him I forgive him for being stupid, but God does not forgive a traitor.’*

The reel spun out, flapping against the plastic hub with a rhythmic *slap-slap-slap*.

Luca stood motionless in the dim light. The puzzle pieces that had haunted his family for six years fell into place with brutal, mathematical precision. His father hadn't succumbed to illness. He had sacrificed his final days to build an inescapable legal and criminal trap for the Marcone family.

Luca reached into his jacket pocket, took out his encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a three-digit speed dial.

"Matteo," Luca said into the receiver.

"Boss," the enforcer answered instantly. "We've got a situation upstairs."

"What kind of situation?"

"Two black SUVs just pulled into the private alley behind the kitchen. Four men, heavy coats. They aren't local boys. They look like Marcone’s crew from Detroit."

Luca’s jaw clenched. "Did they enter?"

"Not yet. Franco has the iron drop-gate down, but they’re parked across the loading dock. Vance’s phone has been buzzing every thirty seconds. They know something went wrong inside."

"Listen to me carefully," Luca commanded, his voice dropping into absolute ice. "Lock down the restaurant. Activate the emergency steel shutters on the street windows. Tell the dining room staff to take shelter in the dry-storage freezer—it's reinforced against small arms fire. Bring Vanessa, Antonio, and Vance into the main prep kitchen. Tie Vance to the prep table."

"What about Antonio?" Matteo asked, a slight hesitation in his tone.

Luca closed his eyes for a split second, his father’s dying words echoing in his mind: *‘God does not forgive a traitor.’*

"Bring Antonio in zip-ties," Luca said. "He sits where he can see everything."

"On it, Boss."

Luca hung up. He looked at the heavy leather ledger sitting on the desk—Salvatore’s master corporate trust. He tucked it firmly under his left arm, picked up the brass skeleton key, and turned to Mia.

"Time to go upstairs," Luca said.

"Mr. DeLuca," Mia said, stopping him before he reached the heavy iron door. She reached into the pocket of her chef's apron and pulled out a small, metallic silver USB drive.

Luca stared at it. "What is that?"

"When Vanessa ordered me to copy the recipes onto her encrypted drive," Mia whispered, "I didn't just copy the ingredients. She had her laptop open on the desk while she was on the phone with Emilio Marcone. She was using a screen-mirroring program to review bank routing numbers. I plugged my own backup drive into the side port while she went to the bathroom. I downloaded her entire document directory."

Luca stared at the twenty-five-year-old girl in astonishment. "You hacked her computer?"

"My major was cybersecurity at DePaul before my father got sick and I had to drop out to work the line," Mia said simply, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Every wire transfer, every offshore account, every bribe paid to the city health inspectors to shut down your smaller locations—it's all on this thumb drive."

Luca took the drive. For the first time that night, the cold mask on his face broke into an expression of genuine, lethal satisfaction.

"Mia," Luca said softly, "if we survive the next hour, you are never peeling another potato in your life."
