Chapter 5 - The Velvet Predator

The main kitchen of DeLuca Ristorante had been transformed into an interrogation chamber under the harsh glare of industrial fluorescent lights. The hum of the massive stainless-steel exhaust hoods drowned out the muffled sirens in the distance.

On the center butcher block, Arthur Vance sat bound to an aluminum prep stool, his hands secured behind him with heavy industrial zip-ties. His designer suit was drenched in sweat, his spectacles cracked and hanging crookedly from one ear.

Beside him sat Antonio, his hands similarly bound, his head hanging between his knees, tears soaking through the fabric of his trousers.

Vanessa, however, remained untied. Luca had forbidden Franco from binding her. She stood leaning against the stainless-steel plating of the hot line, her arms crossed over her chest, smoking an imported slim cigarette with absolute, arrogant calm. She had already kicked off her high heels and stood barefoot on the anti-fatigue rubber mats, her eyes gleaming with the predatory coldness of a woman who believed her rescue party was already outside the door.

Rosa sat on a wooden crate near the pastry station, a rosary moving rhythmically through her calloused fingers. Her lips moved in silent prayer, her face an unreadable mask of stoic grief.

The heavy iron door to the cellar swung open, and Luca emerged, followed closely by Mia.

At the sight of the master ledger under Luca’s arm, Vanessa’s eyes narrowed slightly, but her smile remained razor-sharp.

"Did you enjoy your little trip to the crypt, darling?" Vanessa purred, flicking an ash onto the spotless prep table. "Did the ghost of your saintly father give you some parting wisdom before my uncle turns this building into a parking lot?"

Luca walked slowly toward the center table. He set the master ledger down beside Vance’s trembling hands. He didn't look at Vanessa; he looked at the lawyer.

"Arthur," Luca said calmly.

"Please, Luca, I swear on my children's lives!" Vance sobbed, his voice echoing off the stainless steel. "I didn't know about the poison! Emilio told me it was a clean corporate buyout! He said Antonio was the legal heir and you were running the family into the ground with the unions! I was just the paper man!"

"Mia," Luca commanded without turning around. "Plug the drive into the kitchen terminal."

Mia moved quickly to the expeditor station, where a touchscreen computer managed the restaurant’s inventory and POS systems. She plugged the silver USB drive into the side port. Within seconds, files began populating across the high-resolution monitor mounted above the stainless pass.

Spreadsheets, PDF contracts, scanned bank receipts, and encrypted communication logs flickered across the screen.

Luca pointed to the monitor. "Arthur. Look at screen three. What is account number 884-Vesper?"

Vance squinted through his cracked glasses, his breathing turning into ragged wheezes. "It’s... it’s an escrow account at Banque Cantonale de Genève."

"And who is the sole beneficiary listed upon the transfer of the DeLuca assets?"

Vance swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward Vanessa in sheer terror. "It’s... it’s not the Marcone syndicate."

Luca raised an eyebrow. "Say it louder, Arthur. I want my brother to hear it."

"The sole beneficiary is Vanessa Sterling!" Vance cried out. "She created a secondary bypass clause in the corporate shell! The moment the eighteen restaurants were transferred to Vesper Holdings, sixty-five percent of the liquidation capital was routed directly to her private Swiss accounts! She wasn't handing the empire to her uncle! She was robbing the Marcones AND the DeLucas at the same time!"

The kitchen fell into a silence so thick you could hear the pilot lights hissing on the range.

Antonio’s head snapped up. His bloodshot eyes widened in utter disbelief. "What? Vanessa... what is he talking about?"

Vanessa’s cigarette froze halfway to her lips. For the first time, a crack of genuine panic fractured her porcelain composure.

"Shut up, Arthur, you pathetic worm!" she hissed, stepping forward.

"She’s fleeing to Zurich tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM!" Vance screamed, eager to trade every secret he possessed for his life. "Flight 442 out of O'Hare! She bought a one-way ticket under the name Clara Becker! She used Emilio Marcone’s Detroit crew to provide muscle to force the signing tonight, but she was going to leave Emilio holding the empty shell company while the feds raided the properties!"

Antonio slowly stood up, the zip-ties cutting deep into his wrists. His voice broke into a cracked, hysterical wail. "You were going to leave me? You told me we were starting a new life in Tuscany! You told me we were getting away from the mob!"

Vanessa looked at Antonio with an expression of such pure, unadulterated disgust that it was worse than a slap.

"Start a new life with you?" she laughed, a harsh, jagged sound. "You spineless, sniveling child? You couldn't run a hot-dog cart without crying to your mommy! You were a signature on a piece of paper, Antonio. Nothing more. Once those eighteen deeds cleared probate, you were going to have a tragic heroin overdose in an airport motel."

Antonio collapsed back onto his knees, retching onto the floor tiles, completely broken.

Luca did not laugh. He did not smile. He simply walked over to the expeditor terminal, looked at the banking routing numbers, and tapped a few keys on the keyboard.

"Mia," Luca said.

"Yes, Mr. DeLuca?"

"Can you redirect these escrow release authorizations to our family trust using the master bypass keys on this drive?"

Mia’s fingers were already flying across the keyboard, her eyes reflecting the green and white terminal text. "Vanessa used an automated smart-contract protocol on the Ethereum blockchain for the transfer. It requires two digital keys. One is on this drive. The other..." Mia looked up at Vanessa. "...is on the biometric phone in her pocket."

Luca turned his head slowly toward his former fiancée.

"Vanessa," Luca said, his voice flat as a tombstone. "Hand over the phone."

Before Vanessa could answer, the heavy steel kitchen loading doors at the rear of the alley buckled with a deafening *BOOM!*
