Chapter 9 - Blood at the Altar

Inside the cavernous, rusty interior of Silo 4 at Calumet Harbor, the smell of damp grain and stagnant water was suffocating.

Sofia was tied to a heavy steel chair, suspended over a massive concrete pit where industrial mixers churned slowly below. Her emerald gown was torn at the shoulder, her lip split and bleeding, but her eyes never wavered.

Bianca Falcone paced in front of her, holding a serrated hunting knife, her face flushed with manic glee.

“Look at you now, ‘Your Highness,’” Bianca mockingly bowed, her voice echoing off the corrugated iron. “Where is your Luca now? Probably bleeding out on the pier like the stray dog he is. Did you really think you could take my place? A dirty, floor-scrubbing peasant?”

Sofia spat blood onto Bianca’s designer boots. “Luca will come for me. And when he does, you will beg for the mercy you never showed anyone else.”

Bianca’s expression twisted into absolute hatred. She raised the knife, stepping closer. “I’m going to carve that pretty face of yours so deep that not even the fishes will recognize you!”

BOOM!

The reinforced steel doors of the silo didn't just open—they were blown off their hinges by high-grade C4 explosives!

The shockwave knocked Bianca to the floor, the knife clattering away into the darkness.

Through the burning smoke and falling debris walked Luca Moretti.

He was coated in rain, ash, and blood. In his left hand, he held a smoking combat shotgun; his right arm was strapped across his chest, yet his movements were steady, unstoppable, like an angel of death descending upon the damned.

Behind him marched thirty heavily armed Castiglione loyalists, cutting down Falcone’s guards before they could even shoulder their rifles. The sound of gunfire inside the silo was deafening, brass casings raining down on the iron walkways like hail.

Don Carmine Falcone scrambled out from an elevated catwalk, clutching a briefcase full of bearer bonds. “Luca! Wait! We can make a deal! Half the city! I’ll give you half the city!”

Luca didn't even look up. He raised the shotgun with his left arm and fired once.

The heavy slug tore through the catwalk railings, and Carmine Falcone plunged forty feet down, landing with a sickening crunch on the concrete floor below, dead before he stopped rolling.

Bianca screamed, crawling backward across the dirt, her eyes wide with terror as Luca approached her.

“Luca! Please! It was my father’s idea! I love you! I did this for us!” she sobbed, clutching at his boots.

Luca paused, looking down at her with pure disgust. “You called her a nobody, Bianca.”

Luca stepped past her, leaving her trembling in the dirt, and walked straight to Sofia’s chair.

With one swift motion, he pulled his knife and sliced through the heavy zip-ties binding Sofia’s wrists. The moment she was free, Sofia threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his chest, uncaring of the blood and dirt covering him.

“I knew you’d come,” she sobbed against his throat.

“I will always come for you,” Luca breathed, wrapping his uninjured arm around her so tightly it felt like their souls were merging.

Behind them, Bianca grabbed a discarded pistol from the floor, leveling it at Luca’s back. “DIE, YOU BASTARD!”

BANG!

A single gunshot rang out.

Bianca froze, looking down at the red hole blooming in the center of her white mink coat.

Standing at the blown-out entrance, leaning on a makeshift crutch with a smoking gun in his trembling hand, was Vittorio Moretti.

The old man lowered the weapon, his breathing ragged, his face gray with shame. “Nobody... kills my son,” Vittorio wheezed, before collapsing to his knees.

Bianca fell face-first into the dirt, motionless.

Luca turned slowly, looking at his broken father. There was no hatred left in Luca’s eyes, only the cold, unyielding finality of a changing era.

“Take him to the hospital,” Luca ordered Marco quietly. “Then put him on a plane out of this country. If he ever sets foot in Chicago again... bury him.”

May you like

Luca turned back to Sofia. He gently cupped her face with his bloody hand, his thumb wiping away her tears. “It’s over, Sofia. The city is yours.”
