Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The rain had turned into a relentless downpour by three in the morning, drowning the neon reflections of Chicago in murky puddles. But Luca didn’t head straight to Navy Pier. A good soldier never walked into an ambush on the enemy’s terms.

Instead, Luca, Sofia, and Marco diverted to a secondary staging ground—a fortified penthouse high above Lincoln Park, registered under a shell corporation that Vittorio didn't know existed.

The elevator doors chimed softly as they opened directly into the minimalist glass-and-steel living room. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of Lake Michigan, churning like a black cauldron under the storm.

“Marco, sweep the exterior corridors and set proximity sensors on the fire stairs,” Luca instructed, taking off his wet shoulder holster and setting it on the marble kitchen island. “We have forty minutes before we move.”

Sofia stood in the center of the vast, echoing room, feeling smaller than she ever had. She looked down at her hands—hands that had scrubbed baseboards, washed linen, and peeled potatoes. “All this time... you knew who I was. Why didn’t you tell me? Why let me spend two years serving you like a dog?”

Luca paused, his back turned to her. He slowly turned around, his eyes stripped of all their usual arrogance, leaving only raw, bleeding honesty.

“Because as long as you were a maid, you were invisible,” Luca said, taking a step toward her. “In this world, Sofia, visibility is a death sentence. The moment my father or Falcone suspected that Alessandro Castiglione’s heir was alive, they would have put two bullets in your skull before you could scream. I wanted to keep you in the light. Even if it meant watching you from afar, pretending you were just another servant while my chest ripped open every time you bowed your head to me.”

Sofia’s breath hitched. She looked into his dark, tortured eyes and saw no lies, only the agonizing restraint of a man who had been starving while guarding a banquet.

She walked toward him, her bare feet silent on the hardwood. She stopped inches from his chest, feeling the radiating heat of his body through his soaked shirt. “You threw away an empire tonight for a girl who doesn’t even know how to hold a gun, Luca.”

“You are the empire, Sofia,” Luca murmured, his large, calloused hand rising to gently cup the side of her neck, his thumb tracing the curve of her jawline. “Chicago was stolen from your father. The Morettis and Falcones are nothing but thieves living in a borrowed castle. I’m not defending a maid. I’m taking back what belongs to you.”

Suddenly, the lights flickered and died.

Total darkness consumed the penthouse, save for the rhythmic flashes of lightning outside.

Luca’s protective instincts fired instantly. He tackled Sofia to the floor, rolling her beneath the shelter of the reinforced kitchen island just as the massive glass windows shattered into a million glittering shards!

SHK-SHK-BOOM!

High-caliber sniper rounds ripped through the living room, chewing the Italian leather sofas to ribbons and blasting chunks of plaster from the walls. Red laser sights crisscrossed the darkness, cutting through the swirling rain that now blew violently into the apartment.

“Sniper on the water tower across the street!” Marco yelled from the hallway, returning fire with short, controlled bursts from his submachine gun.

Luca pulled his secondary weapon—a compact SIG Sauer—and pressed it firmly into Sofia’s trembling hands.

“Listen to me,” Luca whispered in her ear, his breath hot against her skin amid the chaos of gunfire. “Safety is off. If anyone comes around that corner who isn't me or Marco, you squeeze this trigger until the slide locks back. Do you hear me?”

Sofia gripped the cold steel, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. But something primal, dormant in her Castiglione blood, snapped into place. The fear didn’t paralyze her; it turned into ice-cold focus.

“I hear you,” she whispered back.

May you like

“Good girl,” Luca said, his eyes flashing with pride. Then, drawing a combat knife and his Beretta, he melted into the shadows like a demon hunting in the dark.
