Chapter 1 - The Blood Oath Broken

The echo of Vittorio Morettiâs cane striking the Italian marble was like the detonation of a distant bomb, silencing the breathing of two hundred high-society elite. In the grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton, under the cold glint of multi-tiered crystal chandeliers, the fragrance of vintage Dom PĂ©rignon was instantly suffocated by the metallic stench of impending violence.
Sofia stood with her knees trembling, her soaked maidâs apron clinging to her shivering frame. The sharp burn of vintage champagne still stung her eyes, dripping down her chin like cheap acid. Beside her, Luca Morettiâs hand was a fortress of raw sinew and burning heat. His fingers were laced through hers, unyielding, defying centuries of Cosa Nostra tradition with a single, brazen grip.
âYou have five seconds to take back those words, Luca,â Vittorio rumbled, his voice scraping like rusted iron across a grave. The patriarchâs knuckles turned bone-white over the silver handle of his cane. His silver-streaked hair and bespoke charcoal suit gave him the illusion of an elder statesman, but every man in this room knew the truth: Vittorio Moretti was a butcher who wore Armani. âYou are the heir to the North Side. You will not drag this familyâs name into the gutter for a girl who launders our sheets.â
Across the perimeter, thirty armed capos moved in silent unison, their hands instinctively slipping under their tailored jackets, resting on the cold polymer grips of concealed Glocks. The air turned thin, razor-sharp with adrenaline.
Bianca Falcone was shaking with absolute fury, her emerald satin gownâworth more than Sofia could earn in three lifetimesâheaving with erratic breaths. âLook at her, Luca!â Bianca shrieked, tears of sheer humiliation smudging her flawless eyeliner. âSheâs nothing! A stray your father took off the streets out of pity! If you leave me at this altar, my father will turn the Chicago river red with your menâs blood!â
âThen let him try,â Luca whispered. His voice was not loud, but it possessed the lethal quiet of a sniper lining up a crosshair.
Luca was six-foot-three of pure, concentrated menace, his broad shoulders squared against the weight of an empire. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his dark, predatory gaze away from his father and fixed it on Bianca. âYou laid hands on what is mine, Bianca. In my world, people lose their fingers for less. Count your blessings that you are leaving this room on two legs.â
Gasps rippled across the chamber. Society matrons covered their mouths, their diamonds catching the harsh light.
âLuca, please...â Sofia choked out, her voice cracked and small against the overwhelming hostility of the crowd. She tried to pull her hand away, terrified that the next sound she heard would be a gunshot ending Lucaâs life. âDonât do this. Look around you. They will kill you.â
Luca looked down at her. In that fraction of a second, the terrifying mob boss dissolved, replaced by a man whose heart beat only to the rhythm of her breath. âThey can try, little bird,â he murmured, his thumb brushing a droplet of champagne from her bruised cheekbone with agonizing gentleness. âLet the whole city burn. Iâm not letting you go again.â
âGuards!â Vittorio roared, the veins in his neck bulging like thick cords. âDisarm him! Strip him of his keys! He walks out of this hall, and he is no son of mine!â
The inner circle of Moretti soldiers hesitated. Luca had led them through bloodbaths in Detroit, had pulled them out of DEA ambushes, had bled beside them in the alleys of South Shore. But Vittorio was the Don.
Two hulking enforcers stepped forward, their eyes heavy with regret. âBoss... please,â one muttered, reaching for Lucaâs shoulder.
Luca didnât flinch. In one lightning movement, he stepped into the guardâs guard, his elbow snapping upward into the manâs sternum with a sickening crack, while his free hand drew a customized Matte-black Beretta from beneath his tuxedo lapel. Before anyone could draw a breath, the cold steel barrel was pressed directly against the temple of the second guard.
âStep back,â Luca snarled, his eyes burning with an unholy fire. âEvery single one of you. The next man who takes a breath in her direction dies where he stands.â
The silence that followed was suffocating. Vittorio stared at his son, his face turning an apocalyptic shade of crimson. âYou are dead to this family, Luca. Dead.â
May you like
Without another word, Luca kept his gun raised, wrapping his left arm firmly around Sofiaâs waist. He hoisted her against his side, shielding her entire body with his own bulk, and backed out through the heavy mahogany doors into the rainy Chicago night. Behind them, the ballroom exploded into screams, shattering glasses, and the unmistakable sound of war being declared.
