Chapter 8 - The Press Conference of Deceit

By 8:45 the following morning, the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was an absolute zoo.

Over a hundred journalists, cameramen, and television producers had packed into the gilt-edged room. Satellite broadcast trucks lined Fifth Avenue outside, their cables snaking through the revolving doors like thick black serpents. Every major news network in the country was carrying the feed live.

At precisely 9:00 AM, the side doors opened.

Olivia Sterling walked onto the stage.

The transformation was astonishing. Gone was the arrogant, mocking socialite of the bridal suite. Gone was the hysterical woman who had screamed at Ethan on the altar.

In her place stood an image of pure, calculated tragedy.

Olivia wore a simple, modest navy-blue dress with long sleeves and no jewelry save for a delicate silver cross around her neck. Her hair was pulled back into a loose, unpretentious bun. Her face was scrubbed clean of heavy makeup, leaving her pale, fragile, and utterly sympathetic. In her hand, she held a single white handkerchief.

Beside her walked Arthur Vance—a notorious, silver-tongued celebrity defense attorney whose specialty was turning high-profile corporate predators into misunderstood victims.

The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, deafening storm. The room sounded like a field of locusts as shutter clicks echoed across the chandeliered ceiling.

Arthur Vance stepped to the microphones first, raising both hands to quiet the room.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press,” Arthur began, his voice deep, resonant, and dripping with theatrical outrage. “What occurred yesterday at St. Jude’s Cathedral was not an act of justice. It was an act of barbaric, premeditated cruelty executed by a man whose immense wealth has convinced him that he is above the law and basic human decency.”

The journalists leaned forward, cameras zooming in on Olivia’s trembling lip.

“My client, Olivia Sterling, was subjected to a coordinated character assassination by Mr. Ethan Vance,” the attorney continued. “A man who fabricated paranoid conspiracies to escape his commitments. But worse than his financial cruelty is his human cruelty. Because when Ethan Vance abandoned Olivia at that altar, he did not just abandon his bride.”

Arthur paused, turning to place a protective, fatherly hand on Olivia’s shoulder.

“He abandoned the mother of his unborn child.”

A massive gasp swept through the room. Reporers began shouting questions simultaneously, holding voice recorders high in the air.

Olivia stepped up to the podium. She raised a delicate, trembling hand to wipe a tear from her cheek. She looked directly into the center camera lens—the feed that was broadcasting live to millions of households across America.

“I loved Ethan with all my heart,” Olivia began, her voice breaking with exquisite, tragic precision. “I forgave his long hours. I forgave his coldness. I stood by him when his corporate stress made him paranoid and angry. But I never imagined he would do this. I never imagined he would throw me away… and throw away our baby.”

She placed a gentle, protective hand over her flat stomach.

“I am five weeks pregnant,” Olivia wept softly, her shoulders shaking. “And despite the horrific lies he told about me yesterday, despite the humiliation he inflicted upon my family… I will raise this child with the dignity and love that Ethan Vance clearly lacks. I will fight for my child’s future. And I will hold him accountable in a court of law for every single ounce of pain he has caused.”

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Cameras flashed relentlessly. Reporters were on their feet, screaming questions over each other:

*“Olivia, will you be seeking full custody?”*

*“Did Ethan know you were pregnant before the wedding?”*

*“How much are you seeking in the civil suit?”*

Arthur Vance stepped forward to shield her, smiling inward at the utter triumph of the performance. The narrative was set. The internet would crucify Ethan Vance. The board would force a settlement. They had won.

Then, from the very back of the Grand Ballroom, the heavy double doors swung open.

The sound of slow, rhythmic, sarcastic clapping echoed through the room.
