Chapter 4 - The Handcuffs on Silk

The sight of federal agents marching down the flower-draped aisle turned the already volatile atmosphere into absolute pandemonium.

Several prominent executives in the back rows quietly stood up, their faces pale, frantically texting their corporate attorneys under the covers of their programs. When the FBI walks into a high-society event, nobody feels safe.

The lead agent, a tall, severe woman with sharp features and a badge clipped to her belt, stopped directly beside Julian Thorne’s pew.

“Julian Thorne?” she asked, her voice flat, carrying over the stunned whispers of the room.

Julian tried to laugh, but it came out as a strangled wheeze. “Agent, there has been an administrative misunderstanding. Ethan Vance is having a domestic dispute with his fiancée, and he’s using corporate assets to create a scene—”

“Julian Thorne, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, corporate espionage, and unauthorized access to protected financial infrastructure under Title 18 of the United States Code,” the agent interrupted without missing a beat.

Before Julian could take another breath, the two uniformed officers stepped behind him. With practiced, mechanical efficiency, one officer seized Julian’s left arm, twisting it behind his back, while the other snapped a pair of cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The loud *click-clack* of the ratchet mechanism echoed sharply against the church stones.

“Ethan! You can’t do this!” Julian snarled, his mask of sophistication completely crumbling as he was forced to his knees in the aisle. His polished hair fell across his eyes. “You have no proof! The Swiss servers are encrypted! You’ll never tie those trades to me!”

“The Swiss servers were seized three hours ago by the Zurich Cantonal Police, Julian,” Ethan replied from the altar, not a trace of emotion on his face. “Turns out, when you use a corporate VPN that routes through Vance Global’s proprietary satellite relays, the encryption key belongs to me. I gave them full access at dawn.”

Julian’s jaw dropped. He stopped struggling, slumping forward like a marionette whose strings had been severed. The agents hauled him to his feet and began escorting him down the aisle, past his society peers who recoiled as if his very presence were radioactive.

Ethan turned his attention back to the woman weeping at his feet.

Olivia had curled herself into a ball on the altar steps, her face buried in her hands. The contrast between her opulent, custom-designed wedding gown and her pathetic, broken posture was agonizing to watch.

“And what about you, Olivia?” Ethan asked softly, stepping down until he stood directly beside her.

She looked up, her makeup ruined, her blue eyes swollen and wild. “Ethan… please. I was stupid. I was weak! Julian manipulated me! He threatened my father’s business! He said if I didn't help him, he would ruin us! Please… you loved me. You held me. You told me I was your family!”

“I did love you,” Ethan said, his voice dropping so low that only she could hear the absolute finality in it. “I would have given you the world, Olivia. I would have built you empires. I would have died for you. But what you failed to understand about a man who has lost everything once before…”

Ethan bent down, his face inches from hers. The coldness radiating from his eyes made her shrink back against the stone.

“…is that I am never afraid to burn it all down to keep my soul intact.”

Ethan reached into his pocket. He took out the engagement ring—a rare, flawless eleven-carat cushion-cut blue diamond that had cost four million dollars at an auction in Geneva.

He didn't throw it. He didn't drop it into her hand.

Instead, Ethan let it drop onto the stone floor between them. The heavy platinum band hit the marble with a sharp, hollow *ping*, rolling a few inches before coming to a stop against the hem of her lace gown.

“Keep it,” Ethan said coldly. “You’ll need it to pay your father’s bankruptcy attorneys.”

Ethan straightened up. He adjusted the lapels of his tuxedo, turned his back on Olivia Sterling, and looked out over the two hundred silent, terrified guests who filled the cathedral.

“The catering has been paid for,” Ethan announced into the microphone, his voice echoing with absolute authority. “The champagne is chilled. Anyone who wishes to celebrate the single greatest financial evasion of my life is welcome to head across the street to the Plaza. For the rest of you… the doors are open.”

Ethan lowered the microphone onto the altar, stepped past the weeping bride, and walked down the center aisle with his head held high, his stride steady, deliberate, and unbroken.

May you like

Behind him, the facade of the Sterling family lay in ruins. Ahead of him, the future was entirely his own.
