Chapter 7 - The Cracking Foundation

The penthouse suite at the St. Regis Hotel smelled of abandoned room service, expensive champagne that had gone flat, and pure, unadulterated panic.

Chloe Laurent was pacing across the Persian rug, clutching a hotel bathrobe around her slender frame. Her designer luggage was half-packed, expensive dresses spilling over the leather edges like colorful entrails. Her phone had been ringing continuously for three hours, flashing names of reporters from *The New York Post*, *TMZ*, and *Vanity Fair*.

She hadn't answered a single call.

When the electronic keycard beeped and the heavy mahogany door swung open, Chloe gasped, clutching her phone to her chest as if it were a weapon.

Ethan Vance walked into the suite, followed by Nolan, who closed the door behind them and stood in front of it like a sentinel.

“Ethan!” Chloe choked out, her voice trembling. She backed away until the back of her knees hit the edge of the king-sized bed. “Look, Ethan, I swear to God, I didn't know the full extent of what they were doing! I just—Olivia is my friend, and she asked me to help her with the paperwork, and Julian said it was just a tax optimization strategy—”

“Sit down, Chloe,” Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

He pulled an armchair out from the small dining table, turned it around, and sat down facing her. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't make a single aggressive gesture. That calm was far more frightening than any shout.

Chloe collapsed onto the edge of the bed, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her phone onto the mattress.

“You have five minutes to save yourself from an indictment as an unindicted co-conspirator,” Ethan began, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees. “Julian Thorne is currently talking to federal prosecutors. He’s already trying to cut a deal, Chloe. And who do you think he’s going to throw under the bus first to shave five years off his sentence? Olivia? Or the maid of honor whose name is on the registration papers for the Cayman shell company?”

Chloe’s breath hitched. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks. “My name isn't on anything! I didn't sign—”

“Your digital signature is on the corporate authorization forms for Meridian Dawn Holdings,” Ethan interrupted smoothly. “Olivia needed a third party to act as the nominal director so her name wouldn't appear on the initial public registry. She used you, Chloe. Just like she used me.”

Chloe covered her mouth with both hands, letting out a stifled, hysterical sob. “Oh God… oh my God. I didn't know… she told me it was just a trust fund for her future children!”

“Olivia doesn't care about children. She cares about leverage,” Ethan said, his gray eyes locking onto hers with hypnotic intensity. “Tomorrow morning at nine, she’s holding a press conference at the Plaza Hotel. She’s going to claim she’s pregnant with my child. She’s going to claim she was framed.”

Chloe’s head snapped up. “She’s… she’s claiming she’s pregnant?”

Ethan caught the flicker of genuine shock in Chloe’s eyes. “You didn't know?”

“Ethan… she can’t be pregnant with your child,” Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible.

Ethan went very still. “Why?”

Chloe swallowed hard, looking toward the door as if expecting federal agents to burst through the walls at any second. “Because… because two weeks ago, Olivia went to a private clinic in upstate New York. She had an IUD implanted. She told me she couldn't risk getting pregnant by you because it would complicate the divorce settlement if you fought for custody.”

Ethan’s eyes flared with a lethal, icy satisfaction.

“Do you have proof of that clinic visit, Chloe?” Ethan asked softly.

Chloe nodded frantically, tears streaming down her neck. “I drove her there! I paid the clinic fee on my credit card because she didn't want it showing up on her family’s accounts! I have the receipt in my email, Ethan! I swear I do!”

Ethan stood up slowly. He smoothed the front of his shirt.

“Forward that receipt to Nolan right now,” Ethan instructed. “And tomorrow morning at eight-thirty—thirty minutes before Olivia steps up to that podium—you are going to walk into the United States Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York with Marcus Gable. You will give them the receipt, the text messages, and a sworn deposition detailing every word Olivia said in that bridal suite.”

Chloe looked up at him, her eyes wide with terror and desperate hope. “And if I do that… will they arrest me?”

Ethan looked down at her, his expression cold and unyielding. “If you do that, Marcus will ensure you get full immunity. If you don't… you will be sharing a cell block with Julian Thorne before the market closes on Monday.”

Chloe didn't hesitate. She grabbed her phone from the bed with trembling fingers. “I’ll do it. I’ll do anything you want, Ethan. Just please don't let them send me to prison.”

May you like

“Good girl,” Ethan said quietly. He turned toward the door, nodding to Nolan. “Let’s go. We have a press conference to attend.”
