Chapter 8 - The Verdict of the Shadows

Two days later, the Federal District Court of New York delivered its final hammer blow.
The courtroom was packed to the gills with reporters, corporate titans, and curious onlookers. Ava sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, Dominic sitting silently at her side. Across the aisle, sitting in the defendant’s box in orange prison jumpsuits, were Julian Vance and Marcus Vance.
The jury foreperson stood up, a stack of verdict sheets in hand.
"On count one, conspiracy to commit corporate espionage and theft of trade secrets, how do you find the defendant, Julian Vance?"
"Guilty."
"On count two, securities fraud and illegal market manipulation..."
"Guilty."
"On count three, criminal solicitation regarding the destruction of Bennett Enterprises..."
"Guilty."
Julian slumped forward, burying his face in his cuffed hands. Marcus began to openly weep. The judge—a notoriously stern magistrate known for imposing maximum sentences on white-collar criminals—slammed his gavel.
"Julian Vance, you have operated in this city not as a businessman, but as an economic parasite," the judge announced, his voice reverberating through the wood-paneled courtroom. "You destroyed lives, bankrupted honest innovators, and conspired to silence David Bennett to cover your own financial ruin. I sentence you to thirty-five years at ADX Florence, without the possibility of parole."
Julian’s head snapped up. Thirty-five years. For a sixty-four-year-old man, it was a death sentence.
"As for Marcus Vance," the judge continued, "for your role in the conspiracy and the aggravated assault of Ava Bennett, you are sentenced to seven years at Sing Sing Correctional Facility."
As the bailiffs moved in to lead the Vance men away in chains, Julian caught sight of Ava standing at the back of the room.
"Ava!" Julian screamed, struggling against the guards. "Ava, forgive me! I made your father rich! I gave him his start! You can't let them lock me away in a cage!"
Ava didn't speak. She merely raised her hand, resting her palm gently over the phoenix crest pinned to Dominic’s lapel. It was the answer her father had waited twelve years to give: *Justice has no ears for the cries of thieves.*
Outside the courthouse, a wall of microphones and cameras waited. Dominic guided Ava through the swarm of journalists shouting questions:
*"Miss Bennett! How does it feel to be the sole owner of the Vance real estate empire?!"*
*"Miss Bennett, what will happen to Cole Dynamics?!"*
*"Mr. Moretti, is the rumor of your engagement true?!"*
Dominic stopped at the top of the marble steps. He raised his hand, and the press corps fell immediately silent.
"Cole Dynamics ceases to exist as of today," Dominic announced smoothly. "Its assets, patents, and facilities are being folded into the Bennett Foundation. And as for our engagement..."
Dominic turned toward Ava. In front of fifty cameras broadcasting live to millions of screens around the world, Dominic Moretti dropped to one knee.
He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing the original engagement ring that Ava had pawned five years ago to pay Ethan’s legal bills—the Bennett family heirloom, restored to perfection, its sapphire center stone blazing like a beacon.
"Ava," Dominic said, his voice entirely steady, his eyes holding hers with absolute devotion. "I spent twelve years building an army to protect you. Now, I want to spend the rest of my life building a future with you. Will you marry me?"
Ava felt tears sting her eyes—not tears of pain, but of triumphant, boundless joy.
May you like
"Yes," she whispered, her voice echoing clearly into the microphones. "A thousand times, yes."
