Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Wall Street

The silence in the grand ballroom was no longer aristocratic; it was the suffocating silence of a mausoleum.
Julian Vance stood shivering behind the bridal table, his hand clawing at his silk tie as if it were a noose. His daughter, Chloe—the radiant bride whose diamond tiara cost more than an average house—stared at her father in sheer disbelief.
"Dad?" Chloe snapped, her voice trembling with irritation and sudden unease. "What is wrong with you? Call security! This psycho just broke Marcus’s arm! He’s ruining my wedding!"
"Shut your mouth, Chloe!" Julian barked, his voice laced with uncharacteristic terror. He stumbled around the table, heedless of the vintage champagne flutes he knocked over, shattering crystal against the marble floor.
Ava looked between Julian and the towering man beside her. Dominic’s hand rested lightly against the small of her back—a touch that was simultaneously protective and overwhelmingly possessive. She had never met Dominic Moretti in her life. She only knew him from the covers of *Forbes* and the hushed whispers of Wall Street traders who spoke of him as an apex predator who bought competitors and dissolved them overnight.
Why was he touching her as if she were made of spun glass?
"Mr. Moretti," Ethan said, attempting to salvage his shred of dignity, stepping between Dominic and Ava. "I don’t know what kind of game you’re playing, but Ava is a nobody. She works seventy hours a week at a greasy-spoon diner in Brooklyn. She has no money, no connections, and no business here."
Dominic didn't even look at Ethan. It was as if the groom were merely an insect buzzing against a pane of glass. Instead, Dominic looked down at Ava, his sharp, aristocratic features softening by a fraction of an inch.
"Is this the man you pawned your mother’s engagement ring for?" Dominic asked her, his voice silky yet dangerous. "Is this the boy who let you work through double shifts with pneumonia so he could patent the neuro-interface software you designed?"
The room gasped. Ethan went rigid, his eyes widening in pure horror.
"How... how do you know about that?" Ava whispered, stunned. The patent was registered solely under Ethan’s name. He had convinced her five years ago that the venture capitalists would never invest in a female-led startup from a no-name developer. He had sworn that once they were married, everything would be shared equally.
"I know everything about you, Ava Bennett," Dominic said softly. "I know that while he was wining and dining venture capitalists in the Hamptons, you were surviving on instant noodles in a moldy basement. And I know that this pathetic excuse of an entrepreneur stole your source code to secure his sixty-million-dollar buyout from Vance Enterprises."
"That's a lie!" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking into a high-pitched panic. "I wrote that code! I spent nights in the lab—"
"You couldn't write an algorithm to save your life, Ethan," Dominic said coldly, turning his gaze upon him for the first time. "I had my forensic software analysts dissect your patented architecture three weeks ago. Every unique encryption protocol bears the watermark *'A.B._1998'*. Ava Bennett. Your dead father’s birth year."
The entire ballroom seemed to tilt. The high-profile investors in attendance exchanged frantic, uneasy looks. If the proprietary software behind Cole Dynamics was fraudulent, the multi-million-dollar merger announced tonight was worthless—a criminal conspiracy.
"Julian," Dominic said, his gaze shifting to the sweating patriarch. "You thought that by burying David Bennett twelve years ago, you had erased his bloodline. You thought you could strip his daughter of her inheritance, throw her into the gutter, and use her brilliant mind to salvage your sinking empire."
"Dominic, please," Julian begged, his hands shaking openly. "We can talk about this. In private. There are agreements... nondisclosure clauses—"
"The clauses died the moment your son poured wine on my fiancée," Dominic declared, his voice cutting through the hall like a razor blade.
Ava’s head snapped up. *"Fiancée?!"*
Before she could speak, Dominic took off his bespoke black cashmere coat and draped it gently over Ava's stained silver dress. The heavy, warm fabric enveloped her, instantly shielding her from the predatory lenses of the photographers and the cruel stares of the crowd.

"Let’s go home, Ava," Dominic whispered, taking her trembling hand in his. "We have an empire to reclaim."
