Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

At 8:00 AM the following morning, the headquarters of Cole Dynamics on Park Avenue was in a state of absolute hysteria.
Ethan Cole paced back and forth across his sprawling corner office, his tie undone, dark circles bruising the skin under his eyes. His phone was vibrating violently across the mahogany desk—calls from the SEC, calls from the Nasdaq compliance board, and screaming voicemails from Julian Vance.
"Where is she?!" Ethan roared at his secretary, who stood cowering near the door. "Where did Moretti take Ava?! Find her address! Offer her whatever she wants—two million, five million—she needs to sign an affidavit stating she gifted me that code!"
"I... I can't reach her, Mr. Cole," the secretary squeaked. "Her phone is disconnected. And... and the board members are already in the main conference room. They called an emergency meeting without you."
"Without me?! I am the founder! I am the CEO!" Ethan grabbed his jacket and stormed out of the office, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
He had spent the entire night arguing with Chloe. The wedding had dissolved into an absolute nightmare; Chloe had locked herself in the master suite of the penthouse, calling him a fraud, while her father suffered a hypertensive crisis. Ethan’s entire existence teetered on the brink of an abyss.
Ethan shoved open the frosted glass doors of the executive boardroom.
"What is the meaning of—"
The words froze in his throat.
Sitting at the head of the boardroom table, in the high-backed leather chair reserved exclusively for the Chief Executive Officer, was not the board chairman.
It was Dominic Moretti.
Flanking him were six high-powered corporate litigators, their briefcases open, revealing stacks of legal documents inches thick.
And sitting directly to Dominic’s right, dressed in a tailored ivory power suit, her chestnut hair styled in sleek, cascading waves, was Ava Bennett. She looked nothing like the exhausted, stained waitress from the night before. Her posture was regal, her chin raised, her emerald eyes cold and penetrating.
"Ava?" Ethan choked out, his voice cracking. "What... what are you doing here?"
"Sit down, Ethan," Dominic commanded without looking up from the tablet in his hands. "Before my security team sits you down by force."
Ethan glanced at the two hulking guards standing near the door and reluctantly slid into the chair at the far end of the table, his palms sweating profusely.
"Mr. Moretti, this is an internal corporate matter," Ethan bluffed, trying to summon a veneer of authority. "Ava was a paid consultant in the early stages of the company. She has no equity. Any claims she makes regarding intellectual property are barred by the statute of limitations—"
"Save the amateur legal defense for your trial, Ethan," Ava spoke up. Her voice was steady, crystalline, and devoid of the love and softness she had shown him for the past five years. "You didn't read the server logs, did you?"
Ethan blinked. "What?"
"When you locked me out of the system two months ago after you proposed to Chloe," Ava continued, leaning forward, "you thought you wiped my master credentials. But you didn't build the architecture, Ethan. I did. Every single morning at 3:00 AM, the core system automatically back-mirrored its original source code to an encrypted, cold-storage private server registered under my father's estate."
Ava signaled to one of the attorneys, who slid a thick document across the table to Ethan.
"That," Dominic said, "is a federal injunction issued by the Southern District of New York at 6:00 AM this morning. It freezes all assets of Cole Dynamics, suspends your acquisition by Vance Enterprises, and transfers interim administrative control of all proprietary patents to David Bennett's sole heir."
Ethan flipped through the pages, his hands shaking so violently the paper rattled. "No... no, this is impossible. I gave five years of my life to this company! You can't just take it away from me!"
"You didn't give anything, Ethan," Ava said, her voice laced with absolute contempt. "I gave you five years. I gave you my ideas, my youth, my dignity. You gave me an empty promise and a dress soaked in cheap wine."
Dominic stood up, buttoning his jacket. The sheer presence of the man seemed to suck all the air out of the room.
"As of five minutes ago, Ethan Cole, the board of directors has officially voted to terminate you as CEO for gross criminal misconduct, corporate espionage, and securities fraud," Dominic announced coldly. "You have twenty minutes to clear your personal belongings from the building. After that, you will be escorted off the premises in handcuffs."
"Ava, please!" Ethan lunged out of his chair, dropping to his knees on the carpet, tears finally streaming down his cowardly face. "You loved me! We were going to build a life together! Don't let him do this to me! Tell him to stop!"
Ava stood up and looked down at the man she had once thought was her soulmate.

"You told me last night that I didn't belong in your world, Ethan," Ava said softly. "You were right. Because this isn't your world anymore. It’s mine."
