Chapter 9 - The Final Confrontation

Before Ethan Vale was transferred to the federal detention complex, he was granted a five-minute consultation with his former clients in the courthouse holding cells. He had demanded to see Vanessa, expecting her to cave to twenty years of psychological manipulation.

Instead, the door opened, and both sisters stepped into the room.

Ethan sat at the concrete table, wearing an orange Department of Corrections jumpsuit. His polished hair was disheveled, his eyes wild with desperate fury. When he saw Claire walking beside Vanessa, his lip curled.

"Vanessa," Ethan pleaded, leaning forward against the table. "You have to listen to me. This is a setup. The police are twisting everything. I did what I had to do to protect the firm! If the public knew your mother had mental breakdowns, the stock would have crashed! I protected you! I gave you your life!"

Vanessa stopped two feet from the table. She looked down at him not with anger, but with absolute, chilling disgust.

"You didn't protect me, Ethan," Vanessa said, her voice dropping to a deadly, razor-sharp calm. "You kept me trapped in a gilded cage of grief. You made me hate myself. You made me believe I was responsible for my family’s deaths."

"You wouldn't have survived without me!" Ethan spat, losing control, banging his cuffed fists on the table. "You were a terrified twelve-year-old brat! I built that company! I made the Whitmore name worth nearly a billion dollars! That money belongs to me!"

Claire stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her sister.

"The money belongs to our mother," Claire said, her voice steady and unshakable. "And to the sister you tried to drown in a lake. You thought because I grew up poor, because I had nothing, that I was weak. But growing up with nothing taught me how to fight, Ethan. It taught me how to survive monsters like you."

Claire reached into her pocket and pulled out the brass key stamped *417*. She tossed it onto the concrete table. It slid to a halt right between Ethan’s cuffed hands.

"Room 417 is empty, Ethan," Claire said, looking straight into his dead eyes. "Mother is in the presidential suite at Mount Sinai Hospital. Her doctors say she will make a full recovery. And you... you will spend the rest of your miserable life in an eight-by-ten concrete box. No money. No suits. No power."

Ethan’s face twisted into an ugly, animalistic rage. He lunged across the table, trying to grab Claire’s throat. "You ruined everything! You dirty little waitress, I should have strangled you in that nursery!"

Two armed marshals slammed Ethan back down onto the concrete, pinning his face to the table.

Vanessa didn't flinch. She reached out, took Claire’s hand, and gave it a firm, loving squeeze.

"Let's go home, Cee-Cee," Vanessa said softly.
