Chapter 6 - The Ghost in Room 417

The iron gates of Whispering Pines loomed out of the midnight fog like the jaws of a beast.
Vanessa didn't bother waiting for a guard. She slammed the heavy front bumper of the Range Rover directly into the security gate, splintering the wooden barrier with a deafening crash. The vehicle roared up the winding, pine-lined gravel driveway, stopping abruptly before the gothic stone sanitarium.
Claire jumped out before the car had completely stopped, holding the heavy brass key in her hand. Vanessa was right behind her, having stripped off her ruined gown’s skirt, running in her slip and boots.
They burst through the heavy front doors. The lobby was sterile, silent, and dimly lit by flickering fluorescent tubes.
Behind the front desk, a night nurse leaped to her feet. "Excuse me! Visiting hours ended at eight! You can't be in here—"
"I am Vanessa Whitmore," Vanessa declared, her voice booming with undeniable authority. "I am the primary legal next-of-kin to Eleanor Whitmore. Step away from that desk or you will spend the rest of your life in federal prison."
The nurse paled, fumbling for the phone. "Dr. Crane... Dr. Crane is already in the east wing..."
"Where is Room 417?!" Claire demanded, slamming her hand on the counter.
"F-fourth floor. End of the private corridor," the nurse stammered.
Claire and Vanessa didn't wait for the slow elevator. They bolted for the emergency stairwell, taking the concrete steps three at a time. The air grew colder with every flight, smelling heavily of bleach, sedation drugs, and long-buried despair.
They reached the fourth floor. The corridor was narrow, lined with reinforced doors that lacked exterior handles—only electronic card readers and brass keyholes.
At the very end of the hall was a reinforced wooden door marked with faded brass numerals: **417.**
The door was cracked open. A sliver of pale yellow light spilled into the hall.
Claire pushed the door open.
Inside stood a man in a white lab coat—Dr. Arthur Crane. In his gloved hands was a pre-loaded glass syringe filled with a clear, lethal fluid. He was standing beside a narrow hospital bed, adjusting the IV line running into the bruised arm of an emaciated, gray-haired woman.
"Step away from her!" Claire screamed.
Dr. Crane startled, turning around in panic. "Who are you?! This is a sterile procedure—"
Vanessa didn't argue. Driven by pure maternal protective fury, Vanessa grabbed a heavy stainless steel IV pole from the wall and swung it with all her might.
The metal pole slammed into Crane’s shoulder with a sickening thud. The doctor cried out in pain, dropping the syringe. The glass shattered against the linoleum, the clear poison soaking harmlessly into the floor.
"Security!" Crane yelled, scrambling backward toward the corner.
"Shut up!" Vanessa roared, pointing the jagged end of the broken pole at his throat. "Touch my mother again and I will kill you myself!"
Claire ignored the doctor. Her legs trembling, she stepped slowly toward the bed.
The woman in the bed was frail, her skin like paper, her silver hair spilling over the pillow. Her sunken eyes slowly fluttered open. She looked up at Claire, blinking against the light.
Twenty years of pain, hunger, and loneliness melted away. Claire looked into those gray eyes—the exact same gray eyes she saw in the mirror every morning.
Claire fell to her knees beside the bed. She took the woman's frail, cold hand into her own.
"Mother?" Claire whispered, her voice cracking into the sob of a lost five-year-old girl.
The woman’s dry lips parted. Her gaze traveled from Claire’s face down to the starched catering apron, and finally to the weeping willow pendant resting on Claire’s chest.
A single tear rolled down Eleanor Whitmore’s hollow cheek.
May you like
"Cee-Cee...?" Eleanor’s voice was barely a breath, raspy from years of silence. "You... you came back from the lake."
