Chapter 4 - The Midnight Deadline

The black Range Rover cut through the torrential rain on Interstate 87 at ninety miles per hour. Vanessa gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles white, her foot heavy on the gas. In the passenger seat, Claire had Ethan’s confiscated files spread across her lap, illuminated by the glovebox light.

"Why tonight?" Claire muttered aloud, flipping through financial ledgers. "Ethan has had full control for twenty years. Why was he trying to silence me tonight? Why was he booking a flight to Switzerland for tomorrow morning?"

Vanessa glanced at the digital clock on the dashboard: **1:42 AM.**

"The Whitmore Living Trust," Vanessa said, her voice tight. "Our grandfather set it up before he died. The trust dictates that when the youngest heir reaches the age of twenty-five, the primary estate must be dissolved and redistributed equally among all living direct descendants. If any heir is missing or declared dead, their share is retained by the trustee—Ethan Vale—after a mandatory twenty-year probate window."

Claire froze. She looked down at her driver's license inside her battered wallet.

*Claire Morgan. Date of Birth: October 24, 1999.*

"Today is October twenty-fourth," Claire whispered, chills rippling down her spine. "I turned twenty-five at midnight."

"And the twenty-year probate window from the fire closes at sunrise," Vanessa said, realization horror-striking her. "If you didn't legally claim your identity before the twenty-year anniversary expired, the probate court was scheduled to finalize the estate at 9:00 AM tomorrow morning. The entire eight hundred million dollars would have permanently transferred into an unrevocable private trust managed solely by Ethan Vale."

"He was running out of time," Claire said, breath coming fast. "He knew I was in the city. He somehow tracked down that I had started digging into my mother's past. If I showed up at the gala, if anyone recognized me, his entire twenty-year scheme would collapse hours before the finish line."

"That's why he manipulated me," Vanessa said, tears of furious self-loathing streaming down her face. "He told me an extortionist was coming to ruin our family. He weaponized my trauma. He knew that if I caused a scene and had you arrested or thrown out, you would spend the night in central booking without an ID or an attorney. By the time you got out tomorrow afternoon, the money would already be wired to Zurich, and Ethan would be on a non-extradition flight."

"He didn't just want the money, Vanessa," Claire said, looking at a specific file labeled *Dr. Arthur Crane - Whispering Pines.* "Look at this medical directive. Signed by Ethan Vale under power of attorney."

Claire read the legal order, her voice catching in her throat:

*‘In the event of institutional closure or transfer of trustee, Patient #417 (Eleanor Whitmore) shall be transitioned to end-of-life palliative sedation, effective October 24.’*

Vanessa slammed her hand onto the steering wheel, her scream echoing inside the vehicle. "He wasn't just planning to steal the fortune! He ordered them to kill our mother tonight!"
