Chapter 3 - Rewriting History

The door to the holding room clicked open. Detective Marcus Vance of the Metropolitan Police stepped inside. He had cold gray eyes and an unreadable expression. In his hand was an evidence bag containing Ethan Vale’s personal leather briefcase.
"Miss Whitmore. Miss... Morgan," Vance said, his eyes lingering on Claire. "Mr. Vale is currently in a cell upstairs. He isn't talking. He’s already invoked attorney-client privilege and is demanding his legal team."
"He doesn't have a legal team," Vanessa said, standing up, the blanket slipping from her shoulders. Her old authority surged back, hardened by rage. "The Whitmore family employs him. And as of ten minutes ago, he is terminated."
"Well, he’s got bigger problems," Detective Vance said, dropping the briefcase onto the table. "We found this in the trunk of his Mercedes in the VIP valet lot. It was packed alongside his passport and two hundred thousand dollars in bearer bonds. It looks like Mr. Vale had a one-way ticket to Zurich scheduled for 6:00 AM tomorrow."
Claire stepped toward the table. "Open the case, Detective."
Vance pulled on latex gloves and unlatched the locks. Inside were neatly filed folders, but one caught Claire’s eye immediately: a faded, yellowing file labeled *Blackwood Incident - Oct 2004.*
Claire pulled the file open. The truth screamed from the pages.
"Look at this," Claire said, her voice shaking.
Vanessa leaned over her shoulder. The first document was an autopsy report from twenty years ago. But behind it was a forged coroner's certificate. The original, clipped behind the forgery, detailed the remains found in the lake house fire: *Jane Doe, age indeterminate, adult female. Child remains: Non-human biological matter (canine bones).*
"My God," Vanessa gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. "He burned the house down with a dog inside to fake Cee-Cee's body?"
"No," Claire said, her eyes scanning the handwritten notes in the margins. "Sarah Jenkins caught him setting the fire. Sarah took me and ran. Ethan caught Sarah on the road. Look at this."
A handwritten agreement was stapled to the back. It was Sarah Jenkins’ handwriting: *I will take the child. I will change her name to Claire. I will never contact the Whitmores. You provide the monthly stipend for her living expenses.*
"Ethan didn't just get rid of me," Claire realized, tears burning her eyes. "He blackmailed my nanny. He paid Sarah to raise me in obscurity. But thirteen years ago, when I was seven, Sarah stopped receiving the checks. She went to confront him. And that’s when Sarah disappeared."
"He killed her," Vanessa whispered, horror dawning on her face. "He killed Sarah to tie up the loose end. And then he left you to the foster care system, assuming you’d just get lost in the cracks."
"And our mother?" Claire asked, turning sharply to the detective. "Where does the key lead?"
Detective Vance picked up the brass key stamped *417*. He turned it over in his hand, inspecting the unique groove cut along the spine. "This isn't a standard hotel key, ladies. Look at the crest on the head. A stylized serpent and staff. This belongs to the Whispering Pines Medical Sanatorium in upstate Chester County."
Claire’s heart leaped into her throat. "The facility Vanessa found on the wire transfer."
"Whispering Pines is a high-security, ultra-exclusive psychiatric hospice," Vance said quietly. "It’s where billionaires put relatives they want the world to forget. If Eleanor Whitmore has been alive for twenty years... that's where he’s keeping her."
Claire looked at Vanessa. The two sisters stood inches apart, separated by twenty years of lies, wealth, poverty, and orchestrated cruelty.
"Vanessa," Claire said softly. "We have to go get our mother."
May you like
Vanessa reached out, her trembling hand touching Claire’s cheek—the very cheek she had struck an hour earlier. "I spent twenty years thinking I was completely alone in the world, Claire. I'm not leaving your side ever again. Let's go."
