Chapter 7 - The Crimson Mark

The paramedic, a gentle woman with warm brown eyes and a reassuring voice, knelt carefully beside me on the blood-spotted floor.

“Hello, Emily, my name is Sarah, and I’m going to take care of you now,” she said softly, opening her medical trauma kit.

I flinched involuntarily when her gloved fingers approached my collarbone, my body conditioned to expect pain from every sudden movement.

“Easy, sweetheart, you’re safe, nobody is going to hurt you,” Sarah whispered, her touch as light as a feather against my burning skin.

Ethan knelt right beside her, refusing to let go of my right hand as the paramedic pulled out a sterile antiseptic wipe.

“Her neck was strangled with that steel chain over there,” Ethan told the paramedic, his voice tight with barely suppressed rage.

Sarah inspected the deep purple-and-red bruising that formed a sickening ring around the circumference of my throat.

Small beads of dried blood were visible where the sharp links had pinched and lacerated the delicate flesh of my neck.

“We need to clean these abrasions immediately to prevent infection, and then we’ll apply a soothing burn gel,” Sarah explained gently.

As the cold, stinging antiseptic touched my open wounds, a sharp gasp escaped my lips, and I squeezed Ethan’s fingers with all my strength.

He squeezed back instantly, leaning his forehead against the side of my head, anchoring me to the earth.

Across the foyer, the second paramedic was checking my knees, rolling up the cuffs of my black trousers to examine the impact damage.

Both of my kneecaps were severely swollen, covered in angry plum-colored hematomas from slamming repeatedly onto the unyielding hardwood.

“The blunt trauma to her patellas is substantial, but I don’t feel any obvious fractures,” the second medic announced after a careful palpation.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Vance stood five feet away, carefully placing Patricia’s gold smartphone into a static-shielded evidence bag.

“Sergeant, that phone is only the tip of the iceberg,” Ethan said, looking up with cold determination blazing in his blue eyes.

“There is an encrypted directory titled ‘The East Wing’ stored on that device that documents criminal conspiracy, fraud, and elder abuse.”

Vanessa, who was being forced toward the grand front doors by two officers, violently jerked her head back into the room.

“He’s fabricating evidence, Sergeant, you cannot open my personal cloud storage without a federal warrant!” Vanessa screamed frantically.

Her face was blotchy and drenched in sweat, her platinum hair sticking to her forehead in wet, chaotic strands.

“The phone belongs to Patricia Miller, ma’am, and she consented to its use when she recorded a felony assault in plain view,” Sergeant Vance replied coldly.

Patricia began feigning hyperventilation, letting her knees buckle so that the officer holding her had to support her dead weight.

“I can’t breathe, my chest is seizing, this is police brutality!” Patricia wheezed, her eyes darting around the foyer looking for pity.

“The ambulance outside is fully equipped, Mrs. Miller, and you will be examined at the county jail’s medical wing,” the sergeant responded without pity.

Ethan rose to his feet, keeping one hand resting gently on my shoulder as Sarah finished applying a thick sterile dressing to my neck.

“Sergeant Vance, look at the calendar entry on that phone for tomorrow morning at six o'clock,” Ethan insisted, his voice ringing with urgency.

The sergeant pulled the phone out through the transparent evidence pouch, using a stylus to scroll down the notification bar.

His eyebrows drew together in a sharp, grim line as he read the flagged calendar entry aloud to the officers.

“Scheduled pickup: Vanguard Private Transport, patient Emily Carter, destination: Blackwood Psychiatric Facility, involuntary commitment under sedation.”

A wave of freezing terror washed through my veins, making my teeth chatter uncontrollably despite the heavy leather jacket wrapped around me.

They had planned it down to the exact hour; if Ethan had arrived twelve hours later, I would have been drugged, strapped to a gurney, and erased from existence.

“Involuntary psychiatric commitment requires two licensed medical signatures and a judicial conservatorship,” Sergeant Vance stated, his jaw tightening.

“Vanessa forged our father’s will to gain sole executorship, and she bought off a private clinic to make Emily disappear,” Ethan said, his voice deadly steady.

Vanessa’s screams turned into hysterical curses as the two officers pushed her through the heavy double oak doors and down the stone front steps.

Outside, the flashing red and blue lights painted the manicured front lawn in violent strokes of emergency colors.

Several neighbors from neighboring estates had gathered at the iron gates, watching in stunned disbelief as the untouchable Vanessa Carter was hauled away.

Her designer high heels dragged uselessly across the damp gravel driveway, leaving long, scuffed furrows in the stones.

Patricia followed behind, weeping and cursing in equal measure, her dignity completely shattered as she was shoved into the back of a second squad car.

The heavy metal doors of the police cruisers slammed shut with a definitive, hollow thud that resonated across the entire valley.

The foyer fell into an eerie, fragile quiet, disturbed only by the distant crackle of police radios and the rustle of medical bandages.

Sarah gently helped me sit up on the plush sofa, wrapping a silver thermal shock blanket around my trembling frame.

“You’ve been through severe physical and psychological trauma, Emily, your body is in deep shock,” Sarah murmured with tender compassion.

I looked down at my hands, watching them shake like autumn leaves in a gale, unable to stop the internal tremors that shook my core.

Ethan knelt down in front of me, taking both of my trembling hands between his warm, calloused palms.

“You are never going to be afraid in this house again, Emily, do you hear me?” he said, staring deep into my eyes with ferocious conviction.

“I promised dad I would protect you, and I failed you for nine long months while I was away, but that ends today.”

Tears spilled freely down my cheeks, soaking into the cotton gauze around my neck, but for the first time, they were not tears of helpless agony.

“You didn’t fail me, Ethan... you came home,” I choked out, leaning forward until my forehead rested against his strong shoulder.

Sergeant Vance walked back into the living room, pocketing his notepad and looking up at the high arched ceiling toward the eastern corridor.

“Mr. Carter, the encrypted video you mentioned regarding your father’s last days... where was that footage recorded?” Vance asked grimly.

Ethan slowly raised his head, his blue eyes turning toward the heavy, padlocked double oak doors at the end of the long hallway.

“Down the East Wing,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a chilling register. “The wing they boarded up the day my father died.”
