Chapter 3 - The Recorded Horrors

The living room fell into an unnatural, suffocating silence, broken only by the sound of my ragged breathing and the drip of water from the shattered vase.
Vanessa stood pinned against the wall, her knuckles pressed against her lips, her eyes darting frantically toward the floor.
Patricia sat huddled in the armchair, her designer gown rumpled, her face drained of every drop of color as she stared at the glowing phone.
Ethan slowly bent down and picked up the gold smartphone by its edges.
He tapped the screen to halt the recording, his thumb moving with deliberate, terrifying calm.
“You were filming this,” Ethan stated, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, yet heavier than lead.
He turned the screen toward Patricia, showing her the frozen thumbnail of me kneeling in agony with the chain around my throat.
Patricia swallowed hard, her throat bobbing as she raised a frail, trembling hand to pat her silver hair.
“Ethan, please... you completely misunderstand what was happening,” she stammered, her voice thin and reedy.
“It was an exercise... a joke between girls, an exaggerated roleplay to teach her some basic humility!”
“A joke?” Ethan repeated, his voice dangerously soft as his knuckles turned white around the edges of the phone.
He pressed play on the freshly recorded clip, turning the volume to its absolute maximum.
Vanessa’s cruel, shrill voice blasted from the tiny speaker, reverberating through the cavernous room with sickening clarity.
“YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A DOG! KNOW YOUR PLACE!” the speaker blared, followed immediately by the sickening, wet slap against my face.
Then came the harsh metallic rattle of the chain being forced over my head, and my desperate, suffocating gasps for air.
The audio captured Patricia’s cruel, cackling laughter, crisp and clear, cheering her daughter on like a spectator at a blood sport.
Ethan listened to every single second without blinking, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles in his cheeks bulged.
When the clip ended, he raised his gaze from the screen and locked eyes with Patricia.
“You recorded your own crime,” Ethan said, his voice trembling with an undercurrent of seismic rage.
“You recorded yourself committing felony assault and battery on my sister, and you sat there laughing about it.”
“Give me that phone, Ethan!” Vanessa suddenly shouted, her panic overriding her fear as she launched herself forward across the rug.
“That is my mother’s private property! You have no legal right to touch her personal device!”
Ethan didn't even shift his weight; he merely raised his free hand, pointing one rigid finger at her face with such authority that she stopped dead in her tracks.
“Take one more step toward me, Vanessa, and I will hand you over to the state troopers in handcuffs myself,” he warned, his eyes boring into hers.
Vanessa froze, her chest heaving against the tight satin of her gown, her eyes darting between Ethan and the door.
Ethan looked back down at the screen, his thumb instinctively swiping back to the device’s photo gallery.
What he saw made the color instantly drain from his face, leaving him looking sickly pale beneath his tan.
The gallery wasn’t just filled with vacations, shopping sprees, and high-society dinners.
There was an entire dedicated album titled with a cruel, mocking emoji, containing dozens of thumbnail videos featuring me.
Ethan’s breath hitched in his throat as he clicked on a video dated four weeks prior.
The screen flickered to life, showing the drafty, unheated storage room on the third floor of the mansion.
I was huddled in the corner on a bare mattress, shivering violently beneath a thin wool blanket while rain lashed the windows outside.
Vanessa stood in the center of the frame, holding a pitcher of ice water, her face illuminated by the harsh flash of the phone camera.
The video captured Vanessa pouring the freezing water directly over my head and bedding, laughing as I screamed from the shock.
“Next time you forget to clean the guest bathrooms before my bridge club arrives, you sleep outside in the rain!” Vanessa’s voice sneered on the recording.
Ethan stared at the screen, his hands shaking so violently that the phone nearly slipped from his fingers.
He closed that file and frantically tapped another video dated two months ago.
This one was filmed in the kitchen, late at night, under the harsh glare of the fluorescent under-cabinet lights.
Patricia was holding the camera, panning across the marble island where my university textbooks and study notes were piled high.
Vanessa was standing over the kitchen sink, casually using a long kitchen lighter to set my term papers and library books on fire, one by one.
The recording captured me on my knees, begging her to stop, crying that finals were only two days away and that my scholarship depended on those grades.
“You don't need a degree, Emily,” Patricia’s voice purred behind the camera on the video. “You’re just a pretty little servant who belongs right here.”
Video after video opened before Ethan’s horrified, disbelieving eyes.
Clips of them dumping my clothes into garbage bags and throwing them out into the mud.
Clips of Vanessa deliberately stepping on my bare feet with her high heels while I was forced to scrub the grand staircase on my knees.
Months of calculated, sadistic, systematic torture, meticulously documented by Patricia like trophies of war.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone, his face completely transformed by an ocean of devastating grief and guilt.
He turned his head toward me, looking at my bruised cheek, my swollen neck, and the way my body trembled uncontrollably against the floor.
“Emily...” he whispered, his voice cracking into a ragged sob. “My God... how long has this been happening to you?”
My throat tightened until I could barely force the words past my bruised vocal cords.
“Since... since the second week after you started your field contract in Denver,” I whispered, tears streaming silently down my face.
“Nine months, Ethan... it’s been nine months of this.”
Ethan closed his eyes, a single, heavy tear cutting a path through the dust on his cheek.
“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked, the agony in his voice breaking my heart all over again. “Why didn’t you tell me what they were doing?”
I looked up at Vanessa, who was staring at me with wide, venomous eyes, silently pleading and threatening me at the same time.
I looked back at my brother, the only person who had ever truly loved me without conditions.
“Because they told me nobody would ever believe me,” I whispered, my voice echoing through the ruined room.
“They said you would think I was crazy, that they would tell the police I was an addict, and that you would hate me forever.”
May you like
Ethan stood motionless for five long, agonizing seconds, the silence stretching until it felt like the air itself would combust.
When he opened his eyes again, the grief was completely gone, replaced by an arctic, unrelenting darkness that sealed their fate forever.
