Chapter 4 - The Siren on the Wire

Vanessa took a desperate, shuddering step forward, her manicured hands clasped together in an attitude of frantic supplication.

The arrogant, glamorous socialite had evaporated entirely, leaving behind a terrified, cornered woman whose facade was disintegrating by the second.

“Ethan, listen to me, you must listen to reason!” Vanessa pleaded, her voice cracking into a desperate whine.

“We can explain everything! We were under enormous stress managing your father’s debts and dealing with Emily’s emotional outbursts!”

“Shut up,” Ethan said, his voice as sharp as a scalpel, cutting through her excuses without an ounce of mercy.

Patricia pushed herself up from the armchair, leaning heavily on the carved wooden armrest, her aged face ashen and slick with cold sweat.

“Ethan, think about our family name!” Patricia croaked, her voice trembling with genuine terror.

“Think about what a scandal like this will do to the Carter legacy, to your business, to your mother’s memory!”

“Do not ever speak my mother’s name with those filthy lips,” Ethan commanded, his blue eyes flashing with pure lightning.

He didn’t waste another second arguing with the monsters standing before him.

He swiped up on Patricia’s phone, bypassed the lock screen using the emergency access button, and punched three digits into the dialer.

9-1-1.

“No! Don't do that!” Vanessa shrieked, making a frantic, reckless dive across the rug to slap the phone out of his grasp.

Ethan anticipated the move effortlessly.

He stepped back, catching her shoulder with his forearm and driving her back toward the sofa with an immovable wall of physical force.

Vanessa collapsed onto the cushions beside her mother, weeping hysterically, her platinum hair falling loose around her shoulders.

The speakerphone buzzed twice before a calm, professional voice cut through the tension.

“Cook County Emergency Dispatch, what is the address of your emergency?”

Ethan held the phone close to his mouth, his voice steady, authoritative, and utterly devoid of hesitation.

“My name is Ethan Carter,” he announced clearly. “I am at 1440 Highland Ridge Road, the Carter Estate.”

“I need police units and an ambulance dispatched to this address immediately.”

The dispatcher’s tone shifted instantly to high alert.

“Mr. Carter, can you describe the nature of the emergency? Is anyone armed or in immediate danger?”

“There are no firearms active, but an aggravated felony assault has just taken place,” Ethan replied, his eyes locked onto Vanessa’s petrified face.

“My twenty-one-year-old sister, Emily Carter, has been physically attacked, strangled with an animal restraint, and subjected to prolonged torture.”

“I have interrupted the assault in progress and secured the victim, but she requires immediate medical evaluation for neck and facial trauma.”

A sharp, ragged gasp tore from Patricia’s throat as she clutched her daughter’s trembling arm.

“Mr. Carter, are the perpetrators still on the premises?” the dispatcher asked, the rapid clatter of keyboard strokes audible in the background.

“Yes, they are,” Ethan answered firmly. “The perpetrators are Vanessa Carter and Patricia Miller.”

“Furthermore, I am currently holding the primary device used by Patricia Miller, which contains dozens of high-definition video recordings documenting months of premeditated physical and psychological abuse against my sister.”

“I am securing this device as primary evidence for the responding officers.”

“Units are already en route to your location, Mr. Carter,” the dispatcher instructed. “Stay on the line with me. Officers have an estimated arrival time of four minutes.”

“Understood,” Ethan said. “We will be waiting in the main salon near the front entryway.”

He didn't hang up; he left the call connected on speakerphone, setting the device face-up on the mantelpiece above the fireplace where neither woman could reach it.

The dispatcher’s calm, ambient breathing echoed quietly into the vast room, a relentless digital witness monitoring every breath they took.

Vanessa buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently as dry, choking sobs racked her body.

“You’ve ruined us,” Vanessa wept into her palms. “You’ve destroyed everything we worked for, you ungrateful, vindictive little monster!”

“You ruined yourselves the first day you raised your hand against an innocent girl who had nobody to protect her,” Ethan replied coldly.

He walked back across the room, stepping carefully over the sea of shattered crystal, and knelt once more beside me.

He shrugged out of his heavy leather jacket and draped it gently around my trembling shoulders.

The jacket still carried the familiar scent of cedar, clean rain, and motor oil—the comforting scent of safety that I had missed for nine agonizing months.

He pulled me against his side, wrapping his strong arm around me, anchoring me against the cold floor.

“You’re safe now, Emily,” he murmured softly into my hair. “The nightmare is over. I swear to you on our father's grave, they will never step foot in this house again.”

I leaned against his chest, clutching the lapels of his jacket, my body finally letting go of the terror that had kept every muscle coiled like a spring for nearly a year.

In the heavy silence that followed, Ethan reached out his free hand and picked up Patricia’s phone once more to check the emergency connection.

As he brought the screen closer to his face, his thumb brushed against a hidden folder tab at the bottom of the cloud storage application.

A folder that had not been displayed in the primary video gallery.
