Chapter 6 - The Cold Steel

The blinding tactical flashlights sliced through the hazy salon, illuminating every floating speck of dust and shattered crystal on the hardwood floor.

Four uniformed Chicago police officers advanced in a tight tactical formation, their hands resting firmly on their holstered sidearms.

At the front of the squad, a seasoned sergeant with graying temples and a weathered jaw swept his gaze across the room with razor-sharp precision.

“Keep your hands where we can see them, everyone stay exactly where you are!” the sergeant barked, his voice booming off the cavernous ceiling.

Vanessa instantly scrambled to her feet against the far wall, smoothing down her torn crimson gown with trembling, manicured hands.

Her face twisted into a grotesque mask of theatrical terror as tears spilled effortlessly down her pale cheeks.

“Officers, thank God you are here, please arrest him immediately!” Vanessa shrieked, pointing a quivering finger straight at Ethan.

“My stepson forced his way into my private residence, shattered my furniture, and brutally assaulted both me and my elderly mother!” she wailed, clutching her hip with exaggerated agony.

From the floor, Patricia began sobbing loudly, rocking back and forth among the wilted flowers and broken glass while clutching her chest.

“He’s a savage, an absolute maniac!” Patricia cried out, her voice raspy and choked with fabricated despair.

“He threatened to murder us both, look at what he did to my antique crystal, look at how he threw me to the ground!”

The sergeant took a cautious step forward, his eyes narrowing as he assessed Ethan’s towering, broad-shouldered frame.

Ethan did not flinch, nor did he raise his voice in defense; he remained utterly immovable, shielding me with the width of his body.

“Officers, my name is Ethan Carter, and I am the co-owner of this estate alongside my sister,” Ethan stated with ice-cold clarity.

“I am the caller who placed the emergency dispatch on open line four minutes ago, and these two women are violent abusers who have been holding my sister hostage.”

The sergeant signaled to his partner, who immediately moved toward Vanessa, cutting off her path to the side hallway.

“Lower your hands, son, and step slowly to the side,” the sergeant instructed Ethan, keeping his tone measured and professional.

Ethan did not step away from me; instead, he gently eased me behind him while raising his right hand to display the gold smartphone.

“Before you listen to another lie pouring out of their mouths, Sergeant, look at the floor at your boots,” Ethan said quietly.

The lead officer glanced downward, his heavy tactical boot stopping inches away from the silver metal pet chain resting on the floorboards.

The sergeant’s eyes flicked from the pet collar to the raw, crimson lacerations encircling my exposed throat.

A sickening realization dawned across the veteran officer’s face as he took in the swelling on my left cheek and my trembling, bruised knees.

“Officer Miller, get the medical kit and call the paramedics inside right now,” the sergeant commanded without breaking eye contact with me.

“No, wait, you don’t understand, she is mentally unstable!” Vanessa screamed, her voice rising into a sharp, grating crescendo of panic.

“Emily is suffering from severe psychosis, she put that chain on herself to frame me, she has been self-harming for months!”

Patricia nodded frantically from the carpet, her silver hair disheveled like a ruined nest.

“It’s the truth, officer, she’s a pathological liar, she broke that vase herself when she had a violent fit!” Patricia gasped out.

Ethan stepped forward, unlocked Patricia’s gold phone with a single flick of his thumb, and turned the high-definition screen toward the sergeant’s face.

“Hear it directly from their own mouths, Sergeant,” Ethan said, pressing play on the live recording captured only minutes earlier.

The crisp, unmistakable audio echoed through the cavernous salon with terrifying, gut-wrenching clarity.

Vanessa’s recorded voice roared through the speaker: “YOU'RE NOTHING BUT A DOG! KNOW YOUR PLACE!”

On the glowing display, the officers watched in horrific silence as Vanessa struck my face with brutal force.

The video showed the heavy silver chain being forced around my neck and yanked downward until my knees crashed against the floor.

It captured Patricia’s cruel, high-pitched laughter in crystal-clear fidelity as she mocked my tears and zoomed in on my agony.

The sergeant’s jaw clenched so hard that the muscles in his neck stood out like taut cables.

The two younger officers behind him stiffened, their expressions hardening from cautious skepticism into righteous, cold fury.

“Turn around and put your hands behind your back right now, ma’am,” the sergeant commanded, stepping past Ethan and advancing on Vanessa.

Vanessa’s eyes bulged with primal terror as she backed away toward the heavy draperies.

“Don’t you touch me! Do you know who my lawyer is? Do you know who I am in this city?” she screeched, flailing her arms wildly.

Officer Miller caught Vanessa’s right wrist in a firm, practiced grip and twisted her arm behind her back with effortless control.

Vanessa let out an ear-piercing shriek of outrage as the cold steel handcuffs snapped shut around her delicate wrists.

Click. Click.

The sound of the ratcheting metal echoed through the room like the strike of a judicial gavel.

“Vanessa Carter, you are under arrest for felony domestic battery, aggravated assault, and unlawful restraint,” Officer Miller recited in an unwavering monotone.

“Patricia Miller, do not move an inch,” the other officer ordered, approaching the armchair where the sixty-six-year-old woman cowered.

Patricia stopped weeping instantly, her pale face draining of what little color remained until she looked like a withered corpse.

“You can’t arrest an elderly woman, I have a heart condition, I will sue this entire department!” Patricia sputtered, pulling her arms against her chest.

The officer bent down, firmly prying her frail, venomous hands behind her purple silk dress and securing the second pair of cuffs.

The sharp metallic clicks sounded like sweet salvation in the depths of my battered soul.

Vanessa fought against Officer Miller’s grip, thrashing her body in a desperate, futile attempt to break free.

“Ethan, you bastard, you will burn in hell for this!” Vanessa screamed, her glamorous facade completely annihilated into pure venom.

“I took care of your father, I built this family, and you give everything to this pathetic, sniveling little rat!”

Ethan didn’t give her the satisfaction of a response; he kept his broad back turned toward her, wrapping both arms around me as my body gave in to silent, racking sobs.

The heavy leather of his jacket smelled like fresh rain and pine, a fortress of safety standing against nine months of utter darkness.

“I’ve got you, Emily,” Ethan whispered into my hair, his own voice cracking with deep, protective sorrow.

“The monsters are in chains, and they are never, ever coming back.”

May you like

Through the shattered front entrance, the flashing red and blue lights illuminated two paramedics carrying trauma bags into the foyer.

The long, suffocating nightmare was finally cracking open, but the darkest secrets of the Carter family estate were still waiting in the shadows.
