Chapter 8 - The Sterling Gala Lockdown

Midnight arrived with the fury of a biblical deluge over the city skyline.
Inside the grand seventy-fifth-floor conference hall of the Sterling Tower, over one hundred international journalists, financial analysts, and foreign dignitaries sat in plush leather seats. Dozens of television cameras were broadcasting live to Bloomberg, CNBC, and every major media network across the globe.
On the elevated podium stood Julian Thorne, looking magnificent in an eight-thousand-dollar tailored Brioni suit, smiling with effortless aristocratic charm.
Standing ten paces behind him, looking pale, heavily medicated, and utterly hollowed-out, was Victoria Sterling. Thick layers of makeup concealed the bruises on her wrist and the dark circles of pure terror beneath her eyes. Julian had forced her onto the stage under the direct threat of having her thrown from the penthouse balcony if she stepped out of line.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Julian’s voice resonated through the state-of-the-art acoustic system, projecting confidence and sovereign poise. "Tonight, we announce the dawn of a new financial era. Sterling Global and Thorne Enterprises have officially finalized their merger, creating a multi-trillion-dollar sovereign asset foundation."
Flashes erupted from the press pool.
"Tragically," Julian continued, his voice dropping into a somber, sorrowful tone that would have won an Oscar, "this triumphant day is marred by violence. Earlier this evening, Ms. Sterling's ex-husband—a radicalized former private contractor named Ethan Vance—orchestrated a violent assault at the Belvedere Ballroom, abducting their young son, Leo."
Murmurs of shock and gasps rippled through the gathered journalists.
"Our law enforcement agencies have been compromised by this dangerous domestic terrorist," Julian proclaimed, looking directly into the primary red-light camera. "Therefore, Thorne Private Defense has deployed tier-one assets to neutralize this threat. Furthermore, by emergency executive decree of the Sterling Board, all trust assets belonging to young Leo Vance are hereby transferred under my direct trusteeship for his immediate security."
Julian smiled inwardly. The trap was sprung. Once the legal transfer was broadcast on live global television, Ethan’s legal claims would be severed in international courts, and Julian would have direct access to the biometric accounts.
"Are there any questions?" Julian asked graciously.
Before a single reporter could stand, every single light in the immense hall died.
The television screens flickered out. The camera monitors went pitch black. The hum of the massive building's ventilation system groaned to a dead, absolute halt.
Total, suffocating darkness enveloped the seventy-fifth floor.
Screams erupted from the reporters. "What happened?!" "Is this a blackout?!" "Security!"
Suddenly, the massive floor-to-ceiling glass atrium behind Julian Thorne shattered with the deafening force of a thunderbolt.
Gale-force winds and torrential rain roared into the luxury hall, sending papers, champagne flutes, and teleprompters flying across the room. Screams reached a fever pitch as the wind howled through the ruined windows.
Then, through the howling rain, emergency red beacon lights along the walls slowly began to pulse, casting the entire auditorium in a sinister, bloody crimson glow.
Standing in the center of the shattered glass, surrounded by the swirling storm seventy-five stories above the earth, was a solitary figure.
Ethan Vance had not come through the elevators. He had dropped directly from the sky, wearing high-altitude tactical gear, his parachute lines cut away behind him.
He wore a dark tactical trench coat over his armor, his eyes glowing with the lethal fury of an archangel of vengeance. In his right hand, he held a sleek titanium tactical briefcase; in his left, his silenced Kimber .45.
Victoria Sterling saw him first. She collapsed onto her knees on the stage, weeping in sheer, uncontrollable hysteria. "He's here... the Ghost King... he's come to kill us all!"
Julian Thorne backed away from the podium, his cultivated aristocratic mask completely cracking, revealing the panicked rodent beneath. "SECURITY! SHOOT HIM! FIRE AT WILL!"
Twelve Thorne Private Defense bodyguards drew their automatic pistols, rushing toward the shattered window.
Ethan didn't duck. He stepped forward into the crimson emergency light.
With blinding, impossible speed, Ethan raised his weapon. The silenced gun fired with rhythmic, terrifying precision.
*Phut. Phut. Phut. Phut.*
Four bodyguards collapsed instantly, shot through their shoulders and legs with pinpoint, non-lethal surgical accuracy, their weapons clattering across the wet floor.
Two more charged with stun batons. Ethan caught the first by the throat, spun him around, and drove him face-first into the heavy oak podium, splitting the hardwood in half. Without turning around, Ethan kicked backward, planting his steel-toed combat boot squarely into the sternum of the second, launching him ten feet back into the media camera rigs.
The remaining six guards froze, looking at their fallen comrades, then at Ethan's eyes.
Slowly, unanimously, they dropped their weapons to the floor and raised their hands in unconditional surrender.
Ethan stepped past them as if they didn't exist. He walked onto the stage, the glass crunching beneath his heavy boots, until he stood five feet from Julian Thorne.
The live television transmission—powered by secondary backup generators—suddenly flickered back on.
