Chapter 4 - The Black Dossier

Inside the penthouse suite of the Sterling Tower, thirty stories above the pouring rain, madness reigned.
Victoria Sterling threw an empty crystal tumbler against the floor-to-ceiling glass window. It shattered into a thousand glittering diamonds against the bulletproof pane.
"Why hasn’t he been arrested yet?!" she shrieked at Police Deputy Chief Harrison, who stood uncomfortably near the gold-trimmed bar, sweating through his formal uniform. "A vagrant entered my gala! He assaulted me! He kidnapped my son! I want five hundred SWAT officers kicking his door down by midnight!"
Harrison held up trembling hands. "Ms. Sterling, please, listen to me. We tried. The moment we keyed Ethan Vance’s name into the National Crime Information Center to issue the AMBER Alert, our entire precinct network crashed."
"Then reboot it, you incompetent pig!" Victoria snarled.
"You don't understand," Harrison whispered, his voice trembling. "It didn't crash because of a bug. It was locked down by a Level Nine Omega Classification originating from the Joint Chiefs of Staff. A voice over our direct line told us that if we entered Vance's name again, the entire command staff would be arrested for treason by federal marshals. We can't touch him, Victoria. Nobody with a badge can touch him!"
Victoria froze. Her heart skipped a violent beat. "What are you talking about? He’s a failed logistics contractor! I ruined him five years ago!"
"Did you?"
A cool, cultivated voice echoed through the sprawling penthouse.
Julian Thorne stepped into the room from the private elevator, wearing an immaculate bespoke three-piece suit. He waved Deputy Chief Harrison away with a flick of his wrist. Harrison didn't need to be told twice; he hurried out of the room like a terrified rabbit.
"Julian!" Victoria rushed to him, wrapping her trembling arms around his neck. "You saw what happened! Reyes betrayed me! The police won't help! You have the connections. Use your mercenaries! Kill Ethan and bring Leo back!"
Julian peeled her arms off him with clinical, cold detachment. He walked to the bar, poured himself three fingers of aged bourbon, and took a deliberate sip.
"You really are an idiot, Victoria," Julian said, his tone conversational, as if remarking on the weather.
Victoria blinked, stunned. "Excuse me?"
"Five years ago, you approached me because your family's shipping empire was on the verge of bankruptcy," Julian explained, staring into his amber liquid. "You told me your husband had vanished in Eastern Europe. You offered me his company's private maritime routes and classified government shipping manifests if I helped you forge the probate documents and claim his estate."
"And it saved us both billions!" Victoria argued defensively. "We made a fortune!"
Julian chuckled—a dry, soulless sound. "You thought you married a boring supply-chain manager with a decent trust fund. You were so blinded by your own narcissism that you never bothered to check who authorized those maritime routes. You never asked why his shell corporations had clearance to transport sovereign-grade weapons through international blockades."
Julian stepped closer, his dark eyes fixing on Victoria’s terrified face.
"Your ex-husband wasn’t a logistics manager, Victoria. He was Commander Ethan Cross. Call-sign: The Ghost King. He was the head of the Praetorian Syndicate—the deepest black-ops contractor the global defense sector has ever seen. The man didn't move cargo; he moved governments. He toppled regimes before breakfast."
Victoria’s knees buckled. She staggered against the marble counter. "No... that's impossible. He made pancakes for Leo. He read bedtime stories. He was quiet... he was weak!"
"He was resting," Julian sneered. "He was trying to play house with an heiress who couldn't see gold if it was forged into a crown on his head. And now, you dragged his son across a floor like a dead dog. You didn't just provoke a man, Victoria. You woke up the devil himself."
Victoria began hyperventilating. "Then... then we give Leo back! We surrender! We apologize!"
"Too late for that," Julian’s smile widened, revealing teeth like a shark’s. "You see, my dear, I always knew who he was. Why do you think I courted you? Why do you think I funded your extravagant lifestyle? I didn't care about your rotting shipping company. I wanted the Ghost King to surface."
Julian pulled out an encrypted satellite device from his breast pocket. On the screen, a red progress bar was scanning through satellite heat maps of the city.
"Five years ago, Ethan buried an encrypted digital key known as the Prometheus Ledger," Julian said, his eyes glittering with greed. "It contains the private offshore accounts of seventy world leaders, and the master codes to the automated defense grids of three major powers. He thought he buried it where no one could find it. But he will trade anything for that boy."
"You used me..." Victoria gasped, realizing the horror of her situation. "Leo wasn't just my son... he was your bait!"
May you like
"Of course he was," Julian replied, looking out into the stormy night. "And the bait has worked magnificently. I have just deployed the Cerberus Unit. Thirty tier-one operators equipped with experimental gunships and heavy ordnance. Tonight, the Ghost King dies. And tomorrow, I take his throne."
