Chapter 2 - Blood on the Marble

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone.

Victoria Sterling stood frozen amid the wreckage of crushed crystal and vintage champagne, her mouth agape, her eyes bulging. Her brain completely failed to process the sight before her. Captain Marcus Reyes—the man who had led black-ops extractions in Benghazi, who had once executed an entire rival cartel hit-squad without blinking—was kneeling on the floor like a medieval vassal begging for mercy before his monarch.

"Reyes, are you insane?!" Victoria’s voice climbed into an octave of hysterical fury. She lunged forward, her diamond heels skidding on the champagne. "He is an unemployed vagrant! A nobody I divorced when his company went under! Get up and kill him!"

Reyes did not move. He did not even look at her. His eyes remained fixed on Ethan’s polished black boots, his muscular shoulders trembling. As a veteran of Task Force Black, Reyes knew truths that the Forbes billionaires could never fathom. He knew of the phantom division that operated beyond the reach of the Pentagon and NATO. He knew the myth of the Ghost King—the supreme shadow commander who had systematically dismantled the world’s most dangerous private armies and vanished five years ago after the raid on the Balkan Syndicate.

"Captain," Ethan’s voice cut through the cavernous space. It was neither loud nor boastful; it carried the calm, horrifying weight of absolute authority. "You work for Sterling now?"

Reyes swallowed hard, his throat dry as ash. "Sir... I—I was contracted six months ago. I swear on my mother’s soul, had I known she was your former spouse... had I known you were alive... I would have burned this entire contract to cinders."

"Stand up, Reyes," Ethan commanded softly.

Reyes rose immediately to his feet, standing at rigid military attention. He did not dare make direct eye contact, keeping his chin tilted down in deferential posture.

"Your squad," Ethan said, his hand resting reassuringly on Leo’s back, shielding the boy’s eyes from the carnage. "Clear the exit."

"Sir! Yes, sir!" Reyes barked. He spun on his heel, his eyes flaring with ferocious intensity as he addressed his confused tactical team. "Perimeter escort formation! Double-time! Anyone who steps within ten feet of this man or his child gets a burst through the chest! MOVE!"

The eight tactical operators, conditioned to Reyes’s absolute authority, instantly broke into formation. They snapped their rifles into low-ready and formed an impenetrable human corridor flanking Ethan.

"Reyes, I will have your family hunted down! I will destroy you!" Victoria raged, rushing toward the phalanx of guards.

One of the guards instinctively raised his rifle butt, forcing her back. She stumbled, falling onto her rear once more, looking entirely stripped of her billionaire pedigree.

Ethan stopped. Slowly, deliberately, he turned to face Victoria. His gray eyes drilled into her soul with such lethal clarity that her screams dried up in her throat.

"Five years ago, Victoria," Ethan spoke coldly, "you forged my death certificate while I was recovering in an overseas clinic. You took Leo. You stole everything my public shell company owned. I let you keep it, because I wanted my son to have peace. I wanted to leave the blood and shadows behind."

He took one measured step toward her. Victoria cringed backward, scraping her palms against broken glass.

"But you mistook my silence for weakness," Ethan continued, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that resonated through the cavernous ballroom. "You abused my blood. You hit my son. Hear this clearly: your money cannot buy you an army that can save you from me. The countdown has begun."

Without waiting for a response, Ethan turned. With his son held securely against his chest, guarded by the very security force Victoria had paid millions to command, Ethan walked out of the Grand Belvedere.

Behind him, Victoria sat alone in the puddle of champagne and glass, her manicured fingers clawing at the floor. The five hundred guests looked away, unwilling to meet the eyes of a fallen queen.

Then, from the VIP balcony above, a slow, mocking clap broke the stunned quiet.

Victoria looked up, her mascara-streaked face contorted with desperation. Leaning against the gilded banister on the mezzanine was Julian Thorne—the billionaire private-equity titan, Victoria’s secret fiancé, and the shadowed architect of her recent corporate ascension.

Julian smiled, sipping a single-malt scotch. His eyes, dark and pitiless, watched the grand doors Ethan had just exited.

"Fascinating," Julian murmured to himself. "The dead really do walk. Send word to Cerberus Unit. The target has surfaced."
