Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unmasked

Ethan climbed the vertical steel maintenance ladder toward the warehouse roof, moving with silent, lethal efficiency. In his left hand, he carried a recovered military-grade Milkor multiple grenade launcher taken from the Cerberus vanguard.

He kicked open the roof access hatch and stepped out into the raging storm.

The wind howled at sixty miles per hour, lashing cold seawater and torrential rain across the gravel roof. Hovering fifty feet above the warehouse was Julian Thorne’s command helicopter—a heavily modified Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk painted in matte non-reflective black, armed with twin rotary miniguns.

Standing near the edge of the roof, surrounded by his remaining six personal guards, was Kurt Vane—the legendary commander of Cerberus. He was barking orders into his headset, his face lit by the green display of his tactical terminal.

"...I don't care if four teams are silent!" Vane screamed over the rotor wash. "Flood the bunker with nerve gas if you have to! Thorne wants that boy alive and Vance’s head in a—"

Vane’s words died in his throat as he turned and saw Ethan standing forty feet away in the rain.

The six Cerberus operators reacted instantly, raising their rifles.

Ethan didn't hesitate. He raised the rotary grenade launcher and pulled the trigger three times in rapid succession.

*THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.*

Three 40mm high-explosive rounds tore through the wet air. The first detonated at the feet of the four mercenaries on the left, turning them into a cloud of shrapnel and fire. The second slammed into the roof beneath the two guards on the right, collapsing the concrete deck and swallowing them into the burning inferno below.

The third round flew directly into the open side-door of the hovering Black Hawk.

An apocalyptic fireball erupted inside the helicopter's cabin. The shockwave blew the side doors off their hinges, shearing the tail rotor from the chassis. The massive aircraft shrieked in mechanical agony, spinning out of control across the stormy sky before smashing into the empty harbor basin below, exploding into a towering geyser of burning jet fuel and black smoke.

Kurt Vane was thrown to his knees by the blast wave, his assault rifle hurled over the roof's edge into the dark ocean.

Ringing filled Vane's ears. He coughed blood, staggering back against an air conditioning unit, drawing his sidearm with trembling, blistered fingers.

Before he could raise the weapon, a boot struck his wrist with the force of a hydraulic piston. The gun flew into the night.

A hand like an iron clamp locked around Vane's throat, lifting the two-hundred-and-twenty-pound mercenary commander off his feet and pinning him violently against the brick parapet.

Vane choked, kicking his legs, staring into Ethan’s terrifying, ice-cold gray eyes. Rain poured down Ethan's scarred face, making him look less like a man and more like an elemental demon forged from the storm.

"Who commissioned the strike, Vane?" Ethan asked. His voice wasn't raised against the wind; it penetrated the storm effortlessly.

"Go... to hell, Ghost," Vane spat through bloody teeth. "Thorne... Thorne owns the board. He has your encryption keys... he has your boy's biometric signatures from Victoria..."

Ethan tightened his grip. The cartilage in Vane's neck began to crack.

"Thorne thinks he has keys," Ethan whispered coldly. "The Prometheus Ledger isn't a digital drive, Vane. It's a genetic sequence. It is coded to Leo's bloodline. Thorne doesn't want the ledger to become rich. He wants the offshore launch codes for the Orbital Aegis Network."

Vane’s eyes widened in sheer, naked horror. Even a ruthless mercenary like Vane knew what that meant: total planetary weaponized dominance. Thorne wasn't just a greedy billionaire; he was an absolute megalomaniac preparing a shadow coup.

"Where is he?" Ethan demanded.

"The... The Sterling Tower penthouse," Vane gasped, suffocating. "He... he's holding an emergency press conference at midnight... with the international banking council. He’s going to announce the merger and liquidate your son's assets publicly... so you can't touch him without starting a global market panic..."

Ethan stared at Vane for three silent seconds.

"Thank you for the intel," Ethan said softly.

With a flick of his wrist, Ethan turned and hurled Vane off the roof. The mercenary screamed as he plummeted eighty feet into the freezing, churning waters of the harbor below.

Ethan walked to the edge of the roof, pulling an encrypted satellite communicator from his combat harness.

"Marcus," Ethan said into the mic.

"Commander, Leo is secure on board the phantom cruiser *Vanguard*. We are three miles offshore in international waters. Sarah is with him. He's safe," Reyes’s voice replied through the earpiece.

"Good," Ethan replied, watching the burning wreckage of the Cerberus helicopter illuminate the black waves. "Secure the perimeter around my son."

"What are your orders, sir?"

Ethan wiped the rain from his jaw.

"Julian Thorne wants a public execution of my name. Let’s make sure he gets an audience."
