Chapter 17 - The Poisoned Bloodline

The victory in the boardroom was sweet, but the sweet taste turned to ash before the trading bell even rang that afternoon.

Emily sat in the Chairman's corner office, reviewing encrypted files recovered from Vance’s private safe.

Cole entered without knocking, his expression darker than she had ever seen it.

Behind him walked Harrison Enterprises’ lead general counsel, Marcus Sterling, holding a certified legal injunction wrapped in crimson ribbon.

"Emily," Marcus said, his voice hesitant and strained. "We have an emergency injunction from the New York State Surrogate's Court."

Emily looked up from her computer screen. "An injunction regarding what?"

"Your trust inheritance," Marcus said, placing the heavy legal document on her glass desk. "It was filed twenty minutes ago by a high-powered Manhattan firm representing a private claimant."

Emily frowned, pulling the document toward her. "What claimant? I’m Clara’s only child. The DNA match with Richard was confirmed by two independent labs."

"That's the problem," Marcus said quietly.

He flipped the document to page four.

Attached was a certified laboratory report bearing the seal of the Manhattan Forensics Institute.

"The claimant submitted an emergency petition alleging that the DNA samples used in your confirmation test were systematically swapped by corrupt hospital personnel," Marcus explained.

Emily felt the room tilt slightly. "That’s impossible! Grandfather and I gave our samples under direct armed guard!"

"The affidavit claims the lab director took a two-million-dollar bribe to certify an impostor," Marcus said, his voice laced with dread. "The court has frozen all voting rights of the Harrison Trust pending an immediate, court-ordered forensic swab under state supervision."

"Who filed this?" Emily demanded, her voice cracking with fury. "Who is the claimant?"

Marcus swallowed hard. "A woman claiming to be the legitimate, surviving daughter of Clara Harrison. She has original birth certificates, school records from Switzerland, and matching dental charts."

Emily stared at him in utter disbelief. "A sister? My mother never had another child!"

"The court doesn't know that," Marcus countered. "And until the hearing on Monday morning, the Harrison Trust is frozen. You cannot access the corporate accounts. You cannot authorize security expenditures. You cannot even enter the Harrison estate without a court monitor."

Emily rose from her chair, her breathing rapid and shallow.

"They cut off our money. They cut off our security. They want us completely defenseless."

"Exactly," Cole interjected, stepping up to the desk. "Vance wasn't the mastermind. Vance was the distraction. Whoever engineered this knew Julian would fall, and they used his arrest to drop this hammer."

Emily touched the silver locket around her neck.

Inside the locket was her mother’s secret script: *Look for the snake in the garden.*

Suddenly, Emily looked at Cole. "Where did the lab director live? The one who supposedly took the bribe?"

"A brownstone in Brooklyn," Cole replied. "Why?"

"Because," Emily said, grabbing her coat, "he didn't take a bribe to forge my test. Someone paid him to lie and say he forged it."

She looked at Cole with eyes cold as winter steel.

"We aren't waiting for the court hearing. We're going to Brooklyn."
