Chapter 13 - Secrets in the Vault

The discovery of the serpent watch sent a shudder of icy adrenaline through Emily’s veins for the rest of the grueling day.

She said nothing to Richard. Not yet.

The ominous warning on the index card remained burned into her memory: *He built the flames.*

By midnight, the sprawling Harrison estate in Westchester was silent, wrapped in thick fog rolling off the Hudson River.

Emily slipped out of her silk robe and pulled on dark jeans and sneakers.

She carried a heavy brass key that Richard had given her earlier that evening—the master key to Clara’s private quarters in the east wing.

The door to her mother’s old suite was heavy oak, coated in a fine layer of wax.

The lock turned with a clean, heavy click.

Emily stepped inside and closed the door behind her, flicking on a small penlight.

The room smelled of dried lavender, old paper, and cedarwood.

Everything had been preserved exactly as it was twelve years ago, when Clara walked out the door and never returned.

Emily walked slowly across the Persian carpet, running her fingers over the mahogany desk, the shelves of vintage classics, and the framed sketches on the wall.

She stopped in front of a large oil painting hanging above the marble fireplace.

It was a portrait of Clara holding an infant Emily in her arms.

Emily raised her light, examining the intricate gold-leaf frame.

Near the bottom right corner, she noticed a faint discoloration in the velvet wallpaper behind the molding.

She reached up, her fingers probing the edge of the carved wood.

A hidden latch gave way with a soft mechanical snap.

The entire oil painting swung forward on silent hinges, revealing a heavy steel wall safe set deep into the brick chimney.

Emily stared at the six-digit digital keypad.

Her mind raced through dates. Her mother’s birthday. Richard’s birthday. The day Clara left the estate.

None of them felt right.

Emily touched the silver locket around her neck.

She opened the small clasp. Inside was the engraved inscription her mother had etched by hand: *Courage, my darling.*

Underneath the words was a sequence of tiny Roman numerals that Emily had always assumed was a jeweler's mark: *VII - XII - IX.*

7 - 12 - 9.

Emily stepped up to the keypad and punched in the numbers: 0-7-1-2-0-9.

*Beep. Beep. Clack.*

The heavy locking bolts retracted smoothly.

Emily pulled the steel door open.

Inside lay a thick leather-bound ledger and a small velvet pouch containing a stack of encrypted thumb drives.

Emily pulled out the leather journal and flipped open the brittle yellow pages.

The handwriting was unmistakably her mother’s—elegant, flowing, and urgent.

She turned to the final entry, dated three days before Clara’s fatal accident:

*Julian knows I have the audit files. He threatened me today in Paris. He told me that if I went to Father with the truth about the offshore siphon, he would burn everything down.*

*Julian isn't acting alone. He said there is someone higher up inside the Harrison bloodline funding the entire coup.*

*I am hiding the real master accounts inside the family trust vault. If anything happens to me, look for the snake in the garden.*

Emily’s heart hammered like a war drum.

Julian Vance wasn't just an embezzler; he had stalked and terrified her mother right before her death.

Suddenly, the floorboard behind her let out a distinct, soft creak.

Emily spun around, shoving the journal behind her back.

Standing in the shadowy doorway of the bedroom, a silhouette held a dark, heavy object at its side.
