Chapter 15 - The Poisoned Cup

The heavy steel doors of the underground bunker remained sealed for three agonizing hours.
When the emergency sirens finally went silent and the tactical air filtration system clicked off, the heavy hydraulic release unlocked from the outside.
Emily pushed the heavy door open, her heart in her throat.
The basement hallway was filled with thick, pungent chemical smoke.
Cole was slumped against the reinforced concrete wall, his tactical vest scorched and blood dripping from a gash across his temple, but he was alive.
At his feet lay two breached flash-bang grenades and an assault rifle with an empty magazine.
"Clear," Cole coughed, wiping blood from his cheekbone. "SWAT and State Police just secured the perimeter. The remaining three fled into the woods."
Emily rushed to him, grabbing a clean towel from the emergency kit and pressing it against his bleeding head.
"You're insane," she breathed, her hands shaking slightly.
"I'm paid very well, Miss Harrison," Cole replied with the ghost of a smirk. "And your grandfather is a hard man to disappoint."
Paramedics and forensic investigators swarmed the estate within minutes.
Richard, refusing all medical treatment, sat at his mahogany desk in the damaged study, barking orders at the Commissioner of the New York State Police.
"I don't care what jurisdiction you need," Richard roared, slamming his fist on the charred desk. "Find out who funded these men! Track every wire transfer through Frankfurt and Zurich!"
By dawn, the mansion was secured, but the psychological toll was devastating.
An estate butler brought in a silver tray carrying Richard's morning Earl Grey tea and heart medication.
"Drink your tea, Grandfather," Emily urged gently, sitting beside him on the leather settee. "Your blood pressure is through the roof."
Richard sighed heavily, looking frail under the cold morning sunlight. "They tried to take you from me, Emily. Just like they took Clara."
He reached for the porcelain teacup.
Emily watched him lift the cup toward his lips.
Suddenly, her gaze snagged on the tea's surface.
A faint, iridescent rainbow sheen floated across the dark amber liquid—a nearly imperceptible swirl, like oil on wet pavement.
Her memory flashed back to her years working the dive bar in Queens, where she had once seen a bouncer accidentally wash a glass with industrial degreaser.
"Wait!" Emily shouted.
She lunged forward, smacking the porcelain cup clean out of Richard's hand.
The cup shattered against the hardwood floor.
The amber tea splashed across the antique rug, sizzling faintly with tiny, frothing white bubbles against the wool fibers.
Richard stared in utter shock. "Emily... what on earth?"
Cole stepped forward instantly, drawing a sterile evidence tube from his pocket. He knelt down and dipped a chemical pH strip into the puddle.
The strip turned a violent, pitch-black color within two seconds.
"Potassium cyanide," Cole whispered, his face darkening with rage. "Enough to cause fatal cardiac arrest in under ninety seconds."
Richard’s face drained of all color. He looked from the sizzling rug to the doorway where the household staff stood trembling.
"Who prepared this tray?" Cole demanded, turning toward the butler with lethal intensity.
"The... the new kitchen assistant," the head butler stammered, his knees knocking together in sheer terror. "She said Mr. Harrison requested it early. She left through the delivery bay two minutes ago!"
Cole sprinted toward the door, his radio crackling with furious commands.
Emily knelt beside Richard, whose breathing had turned shallow and ragged from shock.
She took his cold hands in hers, her voice steady and resolute.

"They aren't trying to scare us anymore, Grandfather," Emily said, her blue eyes gleaming with fierce, cold fire.
"They're executing a hit list. And now, it's my turn to go on the hunt."
