Chapter 9 - The Shadows of the Bench

Agent Vance immediately drew his tactical sidearm from his holster, clicking off the safety with a practiced motion.

“Get down on the floor, both of you!” Vance commanded in an urgent, hushed whisper.

“The estate has an independent backup generator that triggers within four seconds if the main grid fails.”

“If the lights didn't come back on, someone deliberately severed the primary conduit at the transformer substation down the road.”

Ethan instantly grabbed Clara’s waist, pulling her down behind Julian’s massive mahogany desk, shielding her body with his own.

He shoved the leather binders and the original will deep into the inner pocket of his heavy coat, refusing to let the documents out of his grip.

Outside the tall study windows, the distant hum of heavy diesel engines rumbled through the wet maritime air.

Ethan peeked over the wooden edge of the desk, looking down toward the front gates of the property.

Three matte-black armored SUVs had breached the lower perimeter, driving without headlights through the dense coastal fog.

The vehicles did not belong to the state police or the county sheriff.

They bore private executive protection plates originating from the state capital's judicial district.

Men dressed in unmarked black tactical gear were stepping out of the vehicles, carrying carbines fitted with infrared suppressors.

At the front entrance of the mansion, Captain Miller’s remaining two deputies were caught completely off-guard.

Before the deputies could draw their service weapons, the tactical operatives moved with ruthless military efficiency.

Sharp popping sounds cracked through the rain—taser darts and stun batons neutralizing the deputies before they could radio for backup.

Ethan ducked back down, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles in his cheek throbbed with pain.

“Arthur didn't send lawyers,” Ethan whispered harshly to Agent Vance.

“He sent his judicial protection detail to sweep the house and destroy the vault.”

Agent Vance pulled his radio from his utility vest and pressed the transmission key.

“Command post, this is Vance, we have an armed breach at the north entrance, officer down, request immediate tactical assistance!”

Nothing came through the speaker except harsh, rhythmic static.

“They’re using a high-frequency military jammer,” Vance muttered through clenched teeth, checking his magazine.

“My cell phone has zero bars, and our encrypted police frequencies are completely scrambled.”

“We have less than three minutes before they breach this floor.”

Clara clung to Ethan’s arm, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

“Ethan, they’re going to kill us, aren't they?” she whispered, tears slipping down into her trembling mouth.

“Arthur cannot let this will reach the federal courthouse tomorrow morning.”

“He will burn this entire house down if he has to.”

Ethan looked into his sister’s terrified eyes, his expression shifting from anxiety into cold, unyielding determination.

“Julian didn't just build a vault in this study, Clara,” Ethan said, his voice deadly calm and focused.

He remembered the summer he had spent helping Julian catalog the estate’s historical archives in the carriage basement.

Julian had shown him the emergency maritime tunnel built during the Prohibition era, running beneath the estate’s foundation directly to the ocean cove.

“Julian knew Eleanor and Arthur were wolves,” Ethan continued, leaning down toward Clara.

“He told me once that when the wolves surround the front door, the true master of the house exits through the water.”

Ethan stood up, staying low beneath the window line, and moved toward the heavy floor-to-ceiling bookshelf on the north wall.

He pulled three specific volumes bound in dark blue leather: maritime trade records from the nineteen-twenties.

As the third book tilted forward on its spine, a deep grinding sound echoed from beneath the hardwood floorboards.

A six-foot section of the antique paneling slid inward, revealing a narrow, stone-cut spiral staircase descending into the earth.

A draft of damp, salty ocean air rushed up from the abyss, carrying the sound of crashing waves below the cliffs.

Just as the passage opened, the heavy oak doors of the study downstairs shattered with a violent splintering crash.

Heavy tactical boots began sprinting up the grand marble staircase, their radio whispers echoing through the ventilation shafts.

“Target the master study!” a gruff voice shouted from the corridor below.

“Find the girl, secure the parchment, and leave no surviving witnesses to the breach!”
