Chapter 4 - The Illegitimate Heir

The terrace seemed to contract until there was nothing left in the world except Ethan, Eleanor, and the yellowed paper in his hands.

Ethan carefully slipped his thumb under the heavy fold, breaking the ancient wax seal that had long since cracked with age.

The parchment unfolded with a crisp, dry rustle that sounded terrifyingly loud against the absolute silence of the onlookers.

His eyes moved directly to the header, taking in the official state insignia before descending to the vital records below.

Certificate of Live Birth.

State of Massachusetts, Suffolk County.

Ethan’s eyes snapped to the child's registered name: *Clara Vance.*

Date of birth: October 14th.

Everything on the surface matched the official family records he had read dozens of times since their parents’ tragic automobile accident.

Then his gaze dropped to the registered names of the biological parents.

His heart seized in his chest, missing two full beats before hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Under the section marked *Father*, the neat typewriter script clearly read: *Arthur Alexander Vance.*

Arthur wasn't Clara's great-uncle.

Arthur wasn't her distant, generous benefactor who had taken pity on an orphaned child out of aristocratic guilt.

Arthur Vance was Clara’s biological father.

Ethan’s eyes moved across the document once.

Twice.

A third time, searching desperately for some flaw, some watermark of forgery, or some clerical discrepancy that would make sense of this reality.

There was none.

The official registrar’s stamp was clear, legitimate, and dated twenty-one years ago to the very day.

Then his eyes moved to the section marked *Mother*, and an even deeper, darker chill settled straight into his marrow.

The name typed under the mother's section was *Madeline Cross*, the woman Ethan had called his own mother his entire life.

The puzzle pieces of his childhood snapped together with catastrophic, shattering clarity.

Ethan and Clara were not full biological siblings sharing the same parents.

They were half-siblings.

Arthur Vance, the head of the dynasty, had engaged in a secret, deeply buried affair with Madeline before his untimely, mysterious demise.

And when Madeline and her husband had died in that fiery crash on the coastal highway, Arthur had quietly integrated Clara into the nursery.

Ethan looked up from the parchment, his hands shaking so violently the paper vibrated in the cool ocean air.

Across the glass-strewn floor, Eleanor was watching him with wide, hollow eyes, her hands pressed tightly against her trembling lips.

She wasn't looking at him with the furious arrogance of a wealthy matriarch caught in an ugly domestic squabble.

She was looking at him with the raw, gut-wrenching terror of someone whose entire empire of lies had just been detonated at her feet.

She had known.

She had known every single detail of Clara’s bloodline from the very beginning.

Ethan slowly raised the document, holding it up like an indictment in front of the dozens of watching socialites, investors, and family lawyers.

His voice dropped an octave, no longer loud, but vibrating with a terrifying, lethal resonance that froze Eleanor to her very core.

“YOU KNEW THIS WHOLE TIME?”

Richard Vance stepped forward, his eyes darting frantically between his terrified wife and the official paper in his nephew's hand.

“Ethan, what does that say? Let me see that document immediately!” Richard demanded, reaching out an unsteady hand.

“Stay back, Richard!” Ethan snapped, his voice whipping like a razor across the terrace, freezing his uncle in his tracks.

“Don't you dare come near me.”

Eleanor buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently as a pathetic, dry sob finally escaped her throat.

“She was never supposed to know,” Eleanor wept into her palms, her voice muffled and broken.

“Arthur swore he would destroy the records before his heart gave out... he swore he wouldn't let an illegitimate bastard take what was rightfully ours!”

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the gathering at the edge of the ballroom.

The truth was out.

The entire foundation of Eleanor and Richard’s wealth, the trust funds, the estate, and the corporate voting shares were built upon a stolen legacy.

From the shadow of the tall terrace doors, a small, trembling voice broke through the suffocating tension.

“Ethan?”

Ethan turned his head sharply toward the entrance.

Clara stood in the doorway, leaning heavily against the brass frame, her lilac dress ruined by the lawn’s damp mud.

Her face was chalk-white, her eyes swollen with tears, and her entire body shaking as she looked from Eleanor to the document in her brother's hand.

“Ethan, please... what does it say?” Clara whispered, her voice breaking on the silent balcony.

“Who am I?”
