Chapter 10 - Blood in the Atlantic

Agent Vance stood at the entrance of the hidden staircase, gesturing urgently with his sidearm.

“Go, Ethan! Get her down to the cove, now!” Vance ordered, his voice tense with absolute finality.

“I will hold the landing and draw their fire toward the south terrace!”

Ethan grabbed Clara’s hand, pulling her into the pitch-black stone staircase just as flashlight beams sliced through the study doorway.

POP! POP! POP!

Suppressed rifle fire tore through the antique mahogany paneling, sending jagged splinters flying across the study.

Agent Vance fired back three rapid shots from his service pistol, his muzzle flash illuminating the corridor in blinding strobes.

“RUN!” Vance roared before the heavy oak door was kicked completely off its hinges behind him.

Ethan slammed the hidden panel shut from the inside, plunging himself and Clara into total, suffocating darkness.

The sound of combat above was instantly muffled by four feet of solid coastal bedrock.

Ethan pulled his phone from his pocket, using the faint screen light to guide their footing down the slick stone steps.

The staircase spiraled endlessly downward through the wet granite cliffs, the temperature dropping with every single turn.

Clara stumbled on the slimy steps, her dress tearing along the hem, but Ethan kept an unyielding grip on her arm.

“Don't stop, Clara,” Ethan urged, his breathing heavy and ragged.

“Keep moving, the cove is less than fifty yards ahead.”

After descending over one hundred feet beneath the mansion's foundation, the stone stairs ended in a damp sea cavern.

The cavern opened directly into the churning waters of the Atlantic, where the black ocean waves violently smashed against the rocks.

Moored inside a natural stone grotto sat Julian’s vintage mahogany speed boat, kept perpetually fueled on a hydraulic hoist.

Beside the vessel lay an old industrial emergency radio transmitter, mounted directly into the cavern wall.

Unlike modern satellite phones, this transmitter was hard-wired through an undersea copper cable directly to the United States Coast Guard station on the adjacent island.

Ethan sprinted to the transmitter, flipping the main breaker switch.

A low green light flickered to life on the ancient steel console.

He picked up the heavy marine microphone, pressing the broadcast switch with trembling fingers.

“Mayday, mayday, mayday! This is an emergency broadcast from the Sterling ocean grotto!”

“We are under direct armed assault by corrupt judicial operatives!”

“Julian Sterling’s legitimate heir is in immediate danger! We need urgent coastal extraction at grid reference seven-two-four!”

Before the Coast Guard dispatcher could respond, the heavy steel door at the top of the cavern landing was blown open.

BOOM!

The concussive force of a breaching charge shook the cavern, sending loose gravel raining down into the surging ocean water.

Three tactical operatives in black Kevlar armor descended the metal ladder with carbines raised and laser sights sweeping the gloom.

Behind them stepped a tall, imposing man in an impeccably tailored black overcoat, completely unaffected by the damp ocean mist.

He possessed Julian’s sharp jawline and cold, calculating gray eyes.

It was Chief Justice Arthur Sterling in the flesh.

Arthur held a chrome-plated revolver in his right hand, his face settled into a terrifying mask of aristocratic supremacy.

“You certainly have your father’s stubbornness, little girl,” Arthur spoke, his voice echoing across the cavern walls like rolling thunder.

The red laser sights of the two carbines locked instantly onto Ethan’s chest and Clara’s forehead.

Clara froze, stepping slightly behind Ethan, her eyes wide with primal terror.

Arthur stepped forward onto the wet wooden dock, his expensive leather shoes clicking arrogantly against the planks.

“My foolish sister Eleanor was too emotional, too clumsy,” Arthur remarked calmly, tilting his head with cold detachment.

“Shoving you off a balcony with hundreds of witnesses upstairs was the act of an hysterical amateur.”

“Down here, however, there are no socialites, no cell phones, and no federal agents to save you.”

“Tomorrow morning, the headlines will report a tragic maritime accident.”

“A grieving young brother and sister, overwhelmed by the scandal upstairs, attempted to flee in Julian’s old boat and drowned in the storm.”

Ethan stood tall, refusing to flinch even as the red laser beam burned steadily over his heart.

He slowly reached his hand inside his coat, pulling out the original will and holding it directly over the churning, black ocean water.

“Take one more step, Arthur, and this document goes into the propeller blades,” Ethan warned, his voice steady as iron.

Arthur stopped, his eyes narrowing to razor-thin slits as he looked at the fragile parchment in Ethan’s hand.

“You wouldn't dare,” Arthur sneered softly.

“Without that document, Clara has nothing.”

“Without this document, you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary for treason, forgery, and capital murder,” Ethan countered fiercely.

“Because Agent Vance’s tactical vest wasn't just recording audio; his body camera was streaming directly to the Department of Justice.”

Arthur’s cold smile faded completely, replaced by a look of murderous fury that distorted his aristocratic features.

He slowly raised the chrome revolver, aiming the barrel directly between Ethan’s eyes.

“Then I suppose,” Arthur whispered with icy malice, “none of us are leaving this cavern alive.”

Suddenly, from the pitch-black ocean outside the mouth of the cave, the deafening roar of twin turbodiesel marine engines exploded through the gale.

A blinding, two-million-candlepower searchlight from a Coast Guard cutter shattered the darkness, illuminating the cavern in daylight.

A booming loudspeaker echoed across the crashing waves:

“UNITED STATES COAST GUARD! DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND GET ON THE GROUND IMMEDIATELY!”

Arthur flinched against the blinding beam of light, his finger twitching on the trigger.

May you like

Ethan seized the split-second distraction and lunged forward into the cold Atlantic water, dragging Clara with him into the roaring surf.

A gunshot cracked through the cavern, its bullet ricocheting off the granite inches above their heads, as the dark waves swallowed them whole.
