Chapter 8 - The Showdown at Sunday Dinner

Four days passed.
The neighborhood was still buzzing with the gossip, but inside Sarah’s home, a strange and peaceful calm had settled.
Karen had helped Sarah clean the patio until every trace of the ruined cake and the soot from the fire pit was scrubbed away. Even better, the parents from Lily’s soccer team had organized a surprise: they had pooled their money and ordered a massive, professional four-tier unicorn cake from the best bakery in the city. The following afternoon, eight of Lily’s closest friends had returned to the backyard. Lily had blown out her candles with a radiant smile, the memory of Madison’s cruelty overshadowed by the overwhelming love of people who actually cared.
Ethan, however, was living in a nightmare.
On Thursday evening, Sarah received a text from Uncle Frank: *Family meeting at your mother’s house. 7:00 PM. Dolores called everyone. Ethan is there. You need to come, Sarah. It’s time to end this.*
Sarah looked at the text. She had already signed the formal complaint with the county prosecutor that morning. The forensic accountant had finalized the report: Ethan and Dolores had siphoned precisely $43,500 over fourteen months. The bank had already frozen the remaining accounts.
Sarah drove across town to the affluent suburb where Dolores lived in her sprawling, multi-million-dollar brick home—a house paid for by Sarah's late father, maintained entirely on pride and illusions.
When Sarah walked through the heavy oak front doors, the atmosphere in the grand dining room was suffocating.
Dolores sat at the head of the long mahogany table, looking ten years older. Ethan sat to her right, slouched, his eyes bloodshot, wearing an unwashed sweatshirt. Uncle Frank sat at the far end, arms crossed, serving as a silent sentinel.
And sitting at the other end of the table was Madison.
The tension was so thick it felt like breathing underwater. Madison had luggage sitting in the grand foyer. Her eyes were red, her face devoid of makeup, her designer façade completely stripped away.
"You came," Dolores whispered, looking up at Sarah.
"I came because Uncle Frank asked me to," Sarah said, refusing to sit. She stood at the edge of the dining room, her car keys resting in her hand. "The prosecutor called me today, Ethan. The grand jury is being convened next Tuesday for felony wire fraud and grand larceny."
Ethan buried his face in his hands and let out a broken, pathetic sob. "Sarah... please. I'll pay it back. I swear to God, I'll pay every cent back. Just drop the charges. I can't go to jail. Please."
"With what money, Ethan?" Sarah asked cold-bloodedly. "You don't have a job. Your company is bankrupt. Madison has already packed her bags, hasn't she?"
Madison glared at Sarah, but the venom was gone, replaced by bitter, humiliated exhaustion. "I filed for divorce this morning," Madison said, her voice flat. "He told me he had an inheritance. He told me he was a partner. I married a liar and a thief."
"You married an image of yourself, Madison," Sarah countered without missing a beat. "You didn't care where the money came from, as long as it paid for your vacations and your two-thousand-dollar bags. You never asked a single question because you were too busy looking down at everyone else."
"Enough!" Dolores slammed her palm onto the mahogany table. The crystal glasses rattled. "Sarah, I will mortgage this house. I will take out a second mortgage and give you the forty-three thousand dollars by Monday morning. In full. But you will go to the prosecutor and you will withdraw the complaint."
Sarah looked at her mother.
"A second mortgage?" Sarah shook her head in disbelief. "You would put yourself into debt at sixty-six years old... just to protect Ethan from facing the consequences of stealing from his dead brother-in-law?"
"He is my son!" Dolores shouted, her voice breaking with raw, hysterical emotion. "A mother protects her son!"

"And I am a mother!" Sarah roared back, the sound echoing through the cavernous house. "I am Lily's mother! Where were you when she was sobbing on the ground?! Where were you when David died and I couldn't pay for his funeral because you locked up the primary accounts?! You didn't protect me! You didn't protect Lily! You sacrificed us to feed this pathetic, entitled monster you created!"
