Chapter 6 - The Secret Ledger

"Let's go look at the tape," Officer Martinez said, his voice completely neutral.

"Wait!" Dolores intervened, stepping directly in front of the officer. Her voice was strained, on the verge of cracking. "Officer, this is a private family dispute. It was an unfortunate misunderstanding between sisters-in-law. We do not need the police involved. We will handle this among ourselves."

"Ma'am, a 911 call was placed reporting a felony," the officer replied firmly. "Once we are dispatched, we determine if a crime was committed, not you. Mrs. Carter, show me the footage."

Sarah turned and walked toward the sliding glass door. Officer Martinez and the female officer followed. Ethan tried to follow, but Officer Martinez held up a hand. "You folks stay right here on the patio."

Inside the cool, quiet kitchen, the contrast to the madness outside was overwhelming. The kitchen counter was still covered with baking supplies: plastic piping bags filled with leftover pink and green icing, a bottle of vanilla extract, a dusting of flour that smelled like warm, innocent memories.

And right next to the flour sat a thick manila folder labeled *David Carter Estate - Trust Audit*.

Sarah unlocked her tablet and pulled up the security camera app. She rewound the footage twenty minutes and pressed play.

The screen showed the backyard bathed in late-afternoon sunlight. Lily was standing beside the cake, beaming, her hands clasped under her chin while Uncle Frank took a picture with his phone. Then, Madison entered the frame from the left.

The video was crystal clear. It showed Madison pause, look around to see who was watching, and narrow her eyes at Lily's smiling face. Madison shifted the heavy designer bag from her shoulder into her right hand. She took two deliberate steps, squared her shoulders, and swung the bag like a pendulum directly into the middle tier of the cake.

The crash on the audio was sickening. The sound of Lily’s immediate, terrified scream echoed through the kitchen speakers.

Then came Madison’s voice, cold, mocking, and distinct: *"Oops! It's just cake!"*

The female officer beside Martinez grimaced in disgust. "My God," she murmured.

The video continued. It showed Sarah freezing, her face transforming into pure maternal fury. It showed Sarah walking purposefully to the chair, grabbing the bag, and hurling it into the flames.

*"Oops! It's just a bag!"* Sarah's recorded voice rang out.

Officer Martinez paused the video. He exhaled slowly, looking at Sarah. "Mrs. Carter, under state statute, what she did constitutes criminal mischief and intentional property damage. It’s also harassment targeting a minor. As for the bag... technically, you destroyed her property. But given that she initiated the destruction of your property on your private premises during an unprovoked aggression, this is at best a mutual civil dispute, not a criminal felony we would recommend the DA prosecute."

"I don't care about prosecuting her for the cake," Sarah said quietly. She tapped the thick manila folder on the counter. "I care about this."

Martinez looked down at the folder. "What's that?"

"Grand larceny. Bank fraud. Embezzlement from a minor's trust," Sarah said, opening the folder to reveal a stack of audited bank records, signature comparison sheets, and transfer receipts. "My brother and mother used forged signatures to siphon forty-two thousand dollars out of my late husband’s trust for my daughter over the past fourteen months. The money was routed to pay for the very lifestyle my brother used to buy that woman that designer bag."

Officer Martinez scanned the first page. His eyes narrowed. He looked up at Sarah. "Did you file this with the county financial crimes division yet?"

"I met with an investigator yesterday," Sarah said, her voice steady. "They were waiting on the official audit certification, which I received this morning. I was going to confront Ethan privately after the party. I didn't want to ruin Lily's day." Sarah looked toward the stairs, where her little girl was hiding. "But they brought the fire to my house. So now, I'm burning everything down."
