Chapter 7 - A Mother's Counterstrike

When Sarah and the two officers walked back out onto the patio, the dynamic had completely shifted.

The guests were no longer silent spectators; they were divided into distinct groups. Uncle Frank, Sarah's cousins, and four neighbors had formed a protective ring around the patio table, clearing away the ruined cake and picking up the broken plastic topper.

On the opposite side of the yard, near the side gate, Madison and Ethan were engaged in a vicious, hushed shouting match.

"You lied to me!" Madison hissed, her face contorted in ugly fury. "You told me your father's estate paid you a quarterly dividend! You told me you owned the marketing firm outright!"

"I was trying to keep you happy!" Ethan shouted back, his voice cracking. "Every time I tried to talk about a budget, you threatened to leave! You demanded the trip to Cabo! You demanded the two-thousand-dollar bag! Where the hell did you think the money was coming from?!"

"You stole it from an eight-year-old girl?!" Madison screamed, completely oblivious to the fact that everyone could hear her. "You pathetic loser! I gave up my career for this?!"

"What career?!" Ethan spat. "You worked part-time at a tanning salon when I met you!"

"Quiet! Both of you, shut up!" Dolores commanded, trying desperately to pull them apart, her face flushed with humiliation. "The neighbors can hear you!"

Officer Martinez cleared his throat. The sound instantly silenced the trio.

"Ms. Carter," Officer Martinez said, addressing Madison. "We have reviewed the video footage of the incident."

Madison stood up straighter, trying to wipe the mascara stains from under her eyes. "Then you saw her throw my purse into the fire. Arrest her."

"The footage clearly depicts you committing intentional criminal damage against personal property on private premises," Officer Martinez said evenly. "If you wish to pursue charges regarding the bag, Mrs. Carter is fully within her rights to press formal charges against you for criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and harassment of a minor."

Madison’s mouth fell open. "What?!"

"Furthermore," Officer Martinez continued, turning his gaze toward Ethan, "Mrs. Carter has presented certified financial documentation regarding unauthorized transfers from a trust account. A formal report is being logged, and the financial crimes division has already opened an inquiry. I strongly suggest you two consult an attorney."

Ethan stumbled back a step, looking as if he had been struck with a baseball bat.

"Now," Officer Martinez said, looking at the entire Carter family. "The homeowner has requested that you leave the premises immediately. If you do not vacate this property in two minutes, you will all be cited for criminal trespass."

"Sarah, please," Dolores begged, tears finally welling in her cold eyes. She took a step toward her daughter, her hands trembling. "You can't do this to your brother. He will go to prison. It will destroy this family."

Sarah looked at the woman who had birthed her. For thirty-five years, Sarah had craved her mother's approval. She had endured the subtle insults, the blatant favoritism toward Ethan, the constant demands to sacrifice her own happiness to maintain the illusion of the "perfect Carter family."

"You destroyed this family the day you decided my daughter’s future was worth less than Ethan’s vanity," Sarah said. Her voice was ice. "Get off my property, Dolores. All of you. Get out."
