Chapter 19 - THE TABLES TURN

Sophie dropped to her knees, inserted the brass key into the hidden vent, and turned it hard to the right.

A deep, mechanical clunk reverberated through the bedrock beneath the house.

Instantly, thick steel blast shutters slammed down over the wine cellar stairs, cutting off the two mercenaries with the thermal lance. At the same moment, the high-pressure ceiling vents throughout the entire ground floor hissed violently.

Upstairs in the foyer, Victoria froze. "What is that sound?"

Vanessa’s eyes darted to the ceiling. "Mother! It’s the fire suppression system!"

Before the mercenaries could react, a dense, odorless cloud of halon gas billowed from the crown molding, dropping like an invisible curtain over the foyer.

Within ten seconds, the mercenary holding Daniel stumbled, clutching his throat, his eyes rolling back as his brain was starved of oxygen. He collapsed heavily onto the marble. The other operatives began dropping their weapons, coughing violently, their legs buckling beneath them as they collapsed like marionettes with severed strings.

"Masks! Get the masks!" Vanessa screamed, panic clawing at her throat as she fell to her knees, gasping for air.

Victoria, clutching her silk handkerchief to her face, stumbled backward toward the open front door, her regal composure shattering into frantic, animalistic survival.

Daniel, his lungs burning as the oxygen vanished from the room, fought against the encroaching darkness. He held his breath, threw himself out of the chair, and grabbed the dropped sidearm from the floor.

At that moment, the basement access door flew open.

Emma rushed into the foyer wearing an emergency oxygen mask, carrying a spare mask in her hand. She sprinted directly through the dying cloud of gas, dropped beside Daniel, and strapped the mask over his face.

Daniel inhaled deeply, the pure oxygen searing through his lungs, clearing his vision instantly.

He looked up. Vanessa was crawling on all fours toward the shattered front door, gasping like a fish pulled from water, dragging her luxury coat through the dirt and broken glass.

Daniel stood up, towering over her.

He didn't scream. He didn't yell. He simply leveled the firearm directly at Vanessa’s head.

"Stop moving, Vanessa," Daniel commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze blood.

Vanessa rolled onto her back, looking up into the barrel of the gun. Her face was gray, tears of suffocation streaming down her cheeks, her hands shaking violently.

"Daniel... please..." she wheezed, her voice broken, stripped of all arrogance. "Don't... don't let her kill me..."

May you like

Daniel frowned, his finger tightening on the trigger. "What did you say?"
