Chapter 13 - THE VOICE IN THE STATIC

Daniel rushed across the marble floor, holstering his weapon behind his back so Sophie wouldn't see it. He dropped to his knees, pulling his daughter into his chest. Emma was right beside them, sweeping away the jagged shards of porcelain with her boot so Sophie wouldn't step on them.
"Sophie, baby, look at me," Daniel commanded softly, cups of his warm hands framing her cold cheeks. "You're safe. We're right here. What did you receive?"
Sophie handed the phone to her father, her small body trembling against Emma’s side. "The screen just flashed. It came from an unlisted number. It says... it says it’s from the woman who tried to drown my bear."
Daniel took the phone. Emma leaned over his shoulder, her breath hot against his neck as they both stared at the black screen.
Daniel tapped the play button.
The screen lit up with grainy, low-light footage. It wasn't recent; the timestamp in the corner read *July 14, 2017*—two months before Daniel had even met Vanessa Sterling.
The video showed the interior of an upscale, dimly lit private members' club in Manhattan. Sitting at a secluded corner booth was Vanessa Sterling, looking dazzling, expensive, and predatory. Across from her sat a woman whose face remained shrouded in the shadows of the booth's high leather backing, but whose manicured hands—adorned with an antique emerald ring—were unmistakable.
On the table between them lay a thick dossier with the Bennett family crest stamped in gold leaf.
"He is grieving," the shadowy woman’s voice spoke through the phone’s speakers, cultured, cold, and dripping with calculated malice. "Daniel is broken after Claire’s death. He spends seventy hours a week burying himself in board meetings, leaving the child with rotation after rotation of disposable nannies. He is desperate for someone who looks like a savior."
Vanessa’s voice replied, smooth and devoid of any human empathy: "And if the child doesn't accept me?"
"You make the child invisible," the woman commanded coldly. "Break her spirit early. Convince Daniel that the girl's trauma is pathological, that she needs institutional boarding school. Once the child is out of the house, the estate’s trust reverts entirely to Daniel’s primary spouse upon his legal incapacity. And we will ensure Daniel becomes incapacitated within three years."
Vanessa smiled—that same serpentine smirk she had flashed before tossing Sophie’s toy into the deep end. "Consider it done, Mother."
The video abruptly cut to black.
A final line of text typed across the screen:
